Soda blasters,home use
 

Was at Harbor Freight yesterday killing time while my wife got her hair done. They have their $300 soda blaster on sale for $150. Curious if anyone on the Ford Barn has bought & used one & if so how it worked. I have a TIP 99'R pressurized sandblaster I've used for 20 yrs. I've done three bodies & frames with great results & lots of wheels etc. I also have a HF floor s/b cabinet which works OK for smaller stuff inside. I know the soda blasting won't take off rust. I checked the threads but didn't see anything on do it yourself soda blasting. Thanks!!!

To actually answer your question, I did a youtube search and there is a tool review feature where a fellow is stripping an aluminum motorcycle engine with the unit you describe. Looks like it's doing a great job and not marring the softer metal at all. I did a search for "soda blaster harbor freight".

I went to Eastwood's website a while ago and downloaded their instruction book for a kit to retrofit a pressure sand blaster to a soda blaster. Appears that it's only a couple of valves and fittings to allow you to pressure "back flush" the hopper to break up clumps of soda in the tank. Other than that, it's simply your run of the mill sand blaster.

Soda blasting requires a high constant pressure to work correctly. If your compressor is up to it go for it. I just finished up the underside of a 69 camaro today it took about 8 bags total to do firewall, floor bottom, inside dash and quarter areas. About 5 hours tops. Out side of car was all ready painted so that was a challenge in itself. I don't know if HF has soda to supply with blaster. The soda is a commercial grade and not your momma's arm and hammer baking soda.

I've never used soda myself so I want to ask you a question. I have read the ads for commercial soda blasters and companies that will come to the home to blast. They state that soda does remove rust. What have you found to be true?
