39 Horn .. or NOT?
 

I have this NOS shelf worn Sparton Horn Model J17. – notable from the original decal. It came in a original box with the 91A-13833 scratched out (line through it). While it may look like a 39 Ford, research suggests that is may be a large truck horn that served many different manufacturers.

The data also suggests that the J17 was heavily used in WWII jeeps and other such equipment, but using the short squat flute. This one is the long slender flute..

The research suggests that it is a “Jobber” aftermarket item based on the universal mounts (and no bracket) and the single screwed set terminal.
I have not yet tested it. The data says that if I do, the horn will be very loud.

Any horn experts out there? Would this have been used on the 39, or is the 39 only the V model?

That is a replacement (after market) horn for both '39 and '40. It'll fit and function but is not concourse correct.

It looks like haflf of a pair, one short and one long(the one you have) like I had on my 38 zephyr. They are loud but sweet . They are the air electric type and chrysler corp used them as well.

19Fordy... does the listing add any more info about the J17 vs V issue.. It appears that the horn looks like a 39 and should be a V designation. But so many of those that are in service have not decal (since, as I understand, flake off over time). The model # V on the box does not match the decal listing it as a J17.

Does anyone have a pristine 39 horn with an intact decal?

Kevin, No other additional info is provided. "The GREEN BIBLE" Page 564, describes that part as:
Horn assy-less bracket- low pitch- with straight projector- replaced by 11A-13833-C, pass, 1939-47' I am not familar with the 117 vs V issue.

Kevin, once again, this is NOT a Ford (OEM) horn. It was made by Sparton as a service replacement part.
While it will fit a '39 and work, it is not concourse correct.

Ford horns never had a decal on them. Not when new, not now.
I have attached a photo of the first design of horns utilized in very early 1939. Note there is no diagonal brace. Rather, there is an additional brace that held the trumpets in place.
This design was soon replaced by the second and last design. That design eliminated that additional brace and instead had a diagonal brace spot welded to the "main" brace. I have attached a photo of that design as well.
In all instances, there was a small cutout at the very edge of the cover where the wire with loom was routed.
The after-market horn you have, has a terminal routed THROUGH the cover. Not correct but again, you could I suppose, make it work.

I'd noted that, Robert.
That front bracket is a tough one to find if missing as is the clip used with it. The clip is (was easy) to reproduce and fortunately I had the brackets for the early '39 restorations I'd done.
