1935 Light Rod Horn Rod

Well, now I know why its called a light rod, it works the lights and horn. Mine was out of the car. The rod is attached to the circular horn part but only by a wire. I am thinking it should be firmly attached so that when you spin it the whole rod turns. Mine doesn't. Am I missing a piece on top? Or can it be welded to the circular piece? Should I just buy another one?

The hollow tube gets squared off and then crimped to the light switch handle. They are fragile. I've machine up a part to fix them, but its a project if you are not a welder or machinist.

Yeah, I can't weld but I have a welder half a mile away, but that looks like a project. I do have the opportunity to buy one about 80 miles away. Guess I should take a drive?

Suggest buying another complete horn rod.

They have to be straight. Any curvature/ bend, weld or kink will try to turn the lights on when turning the steering wheel. Also the end of it goes through the actual light switch at the bottom of the steering box . If any piece of the end of it , or the spring loaded horn brush touches any metal component in the switch it will ground the horns to work. You need a good straight horn rod.

Not sure if I am remembering correctly; but I don't think you can get the horn rod out in a closed car without dropping the steering box.

Like previously mentioned any bend or bow in the rod will keep it from turning properly in the steering shaft.
