Installing back glass in '38 pickup.
 

I am "helping" a friend get his '38 pickup back together. Last Fall we tried to install the rear glass. I had convinced him to get a fresh gasket as the old one was hard as wood. The install seemed to go OK, except for one little place where the glass just seemed to stop. Of course, in forcing it we broke it. Replacement glass is available, but is it normal to have to trim the glass or the edges of the opening? That same glass had come out, yet it did not want to go back. Is there a specification for clearance between the glass and the opening?

Used glass is very hard to reuse. Get a new glass. Lube the new rubber real heavy. Go Joe hand cleaner work s good. Dish soap and water works good also. Keep metal tools away from the new glass. Warm the rubber gasket. Everybody has their way to install. I’d set the glass onto the center of the opening. Go left and right slowly. Might check the opening for sharp edges like a spot weld close to the edge.If you have a hose release tool it works good around the outside side

I use Ru-glyde for mounting tires and would work very well for the glass installation too.

Did you use nylon rope?

The 38 pickups use flat gaskets for the rear window. Not too surprising that the glass and maybe the opening would need to be tweeked.
