Drip Guard for Gas Filler Neck
 

Anyone ever make or seen a Drip Guard for/attached to the Gas Filler neck?

I will not fill my tank up anymore because it leaks from the cap and drips on my paint. Paint bubble up! Can't find a gasket for the old cap and even then not certain the vent part works properly when gas sloshes on it as going down the road. Doubt its an original so not losing anything. So, I am ordering another cap and hopefully that will help some.

Dumb question I know...

I trimmed an aftermarket "permanent" cap to fit down the neck of the tank of a '33 I had to keep the gas from sloshing out when full. Kinda like this picture form an old magazine article. Don't know if such caps still exist anymore; but it worked for me.

Early Porsche 911 had a rubber flap that you fold out prior to filling up. Its a simple textured rubber with a hole in it to fit over the filler neck and it hides behind the fill door. No doors to hid behind on an early ford but I am sure you could come up with something like a tie on baby bib that could be stowed in the trunk.


I have also seen done what Rich B above posted and it works. Several of Drake's new tanks have a built in anti-slosh valve in the filler neck now, my new '34 tank has one.

Why would the correct air tight 32/4 cap not work since the tank gets air from the hydrostatic unit, not the cap. If you are using an original tank and sending unit.

IF the poster has a 1932-1935 the issue is with the cap, which should be NON-Vented (and the tank, as was original, MUST BE VENTED). 1936-Later did use a vented cap but with the fill neck height well above the top of the tank did not have as much issue. Most repro vendors do not know the differences (or do not care as a quick sale is a quick sale). DO NOT USE A NON-VENT CAP ON A NON-VENTED TANK! Our family had a 1968 Plymouth wagon which ended up with a crumpled fuel tank from that error.

Sorry, I had a DUH moment. It is a 36 Ford Truck. The tank and filler neck is located at the back near the bed.

The biggest thing I think is the "slosh" issue. I know the tank has been replaced but really do not know if it is a vented tank or not. Guess I need to research this.

Here are pic of a repro tank, repro filler neck and original gas cap.If you have original style electric fuel sender then you need the vented cap(pictured). If its the gasket on the cap you can get correct thickness material and make a new gasket to start with.

The 1936 Ford Truck has a non-vented cap as it continued to use the earlier style hydrostatic gas gauge. I assume you are talking about a 1936 Ford commercial pickup truck which should have a vented cap and non-vented tank like the car. Just want to make sure we are talking about the right vehicle.

With my 35, I did something similar to what rich B posted above...in my case I went to the local wrecking yard and got the 'flap', located inside the filler neck of some jap car, trimmed it to suit, and welded it into the filler neck of the Ford. Easily done without blowing yourself up on account ot the filler neck being removeable.

We had no end of problems with our 32 gas cap leaking. Tried a motorcycle inner tube condom etc. went ro a vintique gas cap , problem gone 15000 miles later,no issues.

Hi Rich,

How did you hold it inside the fill pipe? I measure about 2-1/2" inside. The height needs trimming to get in the pipe via the two slots for the Ford cap.
Any info will be welcome.

I bought a cap that "looks" like the one shown above with the V-8 stamped in. It was NOT a vented cap. Instructions in it said to "drill small hole in the Q" to vent it. So, I looking inside and sure enough, there was a Q in their. I drilled a very small hole and put it on so the hole is at the top of center not the bottom. No leaks --- so far....
