Length of 1935 Dipstick I have two dipsticks with my 35 Ford! Of course, two different lengths. Can anyone tell me the correct length of the dipstick, not including the handle?

Re: Length of 1935 Dipstick There are several different combinations of tube lengths and dipstick lengths. But as far as I am aware all of the oil pan castings are the same, and are fixed to the pan at the same place, approximately 2 1/8" from the pan rail.
Measure the amount the dipstick tube protrudes from the casting, this can be difficult, but I've used a steel ruler with a zip tie on it, or something similar. Measure the tube length and add 4 7/8" to that length. That is the distance on the dipstick, excluding the handle, to the FULL mark on the stick. If you have a dipstick that measures close to that, maybe 1/4" either way. That will be the correct one. This gives you the oil level about 5" below the oil pan gasket. Or! If the pan is empty, put 4 quarts of oil in and compare. |
Re: Length of 1935 Dipstick With all due respect, that seems too complicated to me. Doesn't anyone have a dipstick in their 35 oil pan, and, would you measure it for me?

And it's five quarts. Where do folks still come up with four? I wonder if a quick read of say (ex.) the owner's manual might help direct those in the proper direction. |
Re: Length of 1935 Dipstick Thank you.

Re: Length of 1935 Dipstick Kube, dunno, but possibly the confusion about 4/5 quarts is that 1 imperial gallon [which I use in New Zealand] equals 1.2 US Gallons....I always put 4 Imperial quarts in the sump of any flathead.

1935 Fords use a dipstick with an overall length of 16 3/4" (Part No. 48-6750).
There are two different dipstick "bosses" attached to the side of the oil pan, one is 3/4" long and the other is 2 1/8" long. The shorter boss has a tube 8 21/64" long screwed into it and the longer boss has a 7 1/16" long tube. Both of these versions use the same 1935 dipstick as the overall length of combined boss and tube to the oil pan is the same. |
Re: Length of 1935 Dipstick I have a dipstick with part number stamped into it; 48E 6750....it measures 13 7/8' from bottom of stick to flange.

Re: Length of 1935 Dipstick Henry Ford IV,
If you haven't already done so, consider purchasing a copy of the 1935 Ford Book from the Early Ford V-8 Club of America. It's only $30 plus shipping and is a great detailed reference for you 1935 Ford. Here's a direct link: https://shop.efv8.org/collections/fo...book-softbound |
Re: Length of 1935 Dipstick Brian - Can you post a picture? I normally think of an "E" prefix with a model number like 48E as a part manufactured in Europe to accommodate a difference with Ford parts made for the domestic American market. There must be some sort of difference and it would be neat to know what that difference is.

Re: Length of 1935 Dipstick Quote:
I think that many folks dump four quarts (US) in and get to the "full" mark on the stick and think that's it. They don't take into account the sludge at the bottom of the pan, the most often absent gasket at the dipstick boss. |
Re: Length of 1935 Dipstick OK, the dipstick that was in it looks exactly like the one above. It is 13 7/8 inches long. I will use it.
