I drilled the drive shaft tube, just in back of the center bearing.
Put a hose fitting on it, and a small fuel filter on that.
This was after trying all the things, like you described- failed.
I read on here about some one drilling the axle bell- about halfway out.
I would want to remove parts before drilling, cause of chips.

i have a Mitchell OD.I guess I could drill back of the unit before the pinion and put the fitting. But I thought the top bolt on the banjo was the vent.I also have a vent tube on the Mitchell.I driven this car for some 10 years and this is the first time I had this oil on the banjo hsg.Thanks.

I added a torque tube seal and as part of the instructions from Bruce's Rod shop, I added a left side axle vent 10" out for the axle housing to center section with the vent below.

40 Dif.vents through the torque tube. There are two holes on the surface where the torque tube bolts, the lower hole is for any of the Dif. fluid that leaks past the pinion bearings into the torque tube to return to the Diff. The upper hole is the vent.

I’ve also used the top banjo bolt for a vent. Use the top one on the passenger side, the drivers side is much closer to the ring gear and it slings a lot of oil up there. Not as much oil slinging around on the passenger side. My experience anyway.

On my 39 with a Mitchell, I vented it on the top of the axle housing about midway, using a threaded barb with a hose and small filter.

I have drove our 38 coupe since 1964, has no vent, had no problems, if they needed a vent Henry would have installed one

I believe it vents through the vent in the 40 transmission. Millions of early Fords ran many millions of miles without a vent in the rear end. What problem are you trying to solve?

flatmotor40: When I "raked" my 40 I installed a special pinion seal to prevent oil from draining back into the torque tube but, then installed a vent in the top of the rear axle tube to relieve any pressure build up.

Re: ear end vent for 40

The vent on cars with a torque tube is through the torque tube itself, however, if you install a Mitchell, the torque tube is only about 12 inches long from the banjo to the gearbox, requiring a vent in most cases.

Found it was the Mitchell vent had a crack in the tube so I replaced it and I will see if that was the problem,Talked to Mitchell this week and he told me what to do,Thanks
