Today I finally got a chance to go to the DMV and get the title of my 1929 put into my name. $110. Then I ask to register the license plates to my name, No Charge! In Oregon My license plates that are called "Historic Vehicle" plates are Free as long as I own the car! Is this something common in most states?

I understand there may be driving restrictions on "Historic Vehicle" plates in some states. I know there is in California.

I have Year of Manufacture (YOM) plates on my car. I do pay a small fee on them, similar to Vanity Plates.

They didn't tell me of any restrictions, but I will check. I don't plan on it being a daily driver. I sure as hell don't want to drive among all the idiots on Hwy 101 where I live.

I have a Year of Manufacture plate on my car here in Tn. It was $25 one time fee, and is good for as long as I own the car.

Virginia has a similar arrangement and fee. These are the restrictions:

If you plan to use your antique vehicle or trailer solely as a collector's item, you may register your vehicle with antique license plates or permanent vintage license plates.

Registering your vehicle either of these ways limits your use of the vehicle to:

Participation in antique car club activities, exhibits, tours, parades and similar events.
Testing its operation, obtaining repairs or maintenance, selling the vehicle or trailer, transportation to and from events as described above and for the occasional pleasure driving, not to exceed 250 miles from your residence.
Carrying or transporting passengers, personal effects or other antique motor vehicles being transported for show purposes.

The 250 mile restriction is funny, Virginia Beach to Bristol is 400 miles.

I live in Waynesboro Va. close to the middle of the state,250 miles in any direction would most likely put me out of Va. This line in the restrictions is so vague you can drive it for any reason except to work or a commercial ; Testing its operation, obtaining repairs or maintenance, selling the vehicle or trailer, transportation to and from events as described above and for the occasional pleasure driving, not to exceed 250 miles from your residence.Here is the last line in the restrictions of Va. rules.Cannot be used for daily

residence. .My question is what is occasional camping compared to regular camping?Ha HA. Thank you Va. DMV for the humor. 250 miles? Who came up with that?

New York state is so financially mis-managed nothing is free. $55 yearly.

Ohio has similar restrictions. I use a 1930 YOM plate that I put on my car 30 years ago. I think I paid $14.00 to register it. Haven't paid a dime since. There are some restrictions but I'm not sure what they are. I've never been stopped. I know that, if you run on a YOM plate, you must have the antique plates in the car. Mine are under the front seat.
I think if a policeman stops me I'll just tell him I'm on the way to the mechanic shop.

me, personally, i would just get whatever was the least restrictive.
the idea of either an insurance company or johnny law telling me i cant drive something i own, maintained, and repaired myself disgusts me.
same reason i would never own a car that came with "subscription" services that are already in the car.

Hello, i have year of manufacturing tags on my 1931 Model A , they are similar in usage as the antique plates, You have to send Penn Dot pictures of the plates and they have to approve them, have to buy the antique plate if you don’t have them and then pay again for the YOM plate transfer. Around $220 with notarized paperwork.

horseless carriage plates in Florida do not have to be renewed annually.
one and done as long as you own the car.

I use YOM plates here in N.H. too.I have the regular antique antique plates,under the seat,costs me about $16.per year per car.YOM is free,just have to show them at the DMV,they say those are cool,and they give me a piece of paper saying they are certified.That part is free.During covid the DMV was only dealing in essential services in person.Toy cars were not considered essential.We could register antique but it was done through the mail.No in-person for the certification.That was not an essential service.When it was all happening I talked to a woman in the office there that explained it all to me.She was very nice,but said there would be nobody meeting up with me to provide a non-essential service.She wouldn't just come out and tell me to just run them anyway,but I got the strong impression it was her thoughts.I went ahead and ran them,as I really was registered.This month is my birth month and I have to register all my vehicles,and a few days ago I realized that I never did certify my YOM plates after that.They were all certified to me previously,so if I ever get involved in a high speed chase or a drive by shooting they will be able to track me down.

Once & done for "Historic Vehicle" here in Alaska. I would run YOM plates, but they are few and far between, and if you could find them, they are out of my price range.

Hello again, on the Pennsylvania antique plates they are a permanent issue,as long as the owner keeps the car , they can be transferred to buyer of car with previous owner’s permission. They also don’t need to go through the yearly inspection as per regulations.but the new owner will have to pay the re registration of the oid plate.When I bought the 1971 MGB I also kept the plate antique plate that was on it , being the purple and white older issue.

It looks like most states have about the same as far as registering our old tin. And my insurance was way less for Liability and collision. I was surprised at the cost. Now if it would stop raining and blowing so I could enjoy my new tin, I would be very happy.

My New Hampshire experience was the same as Keith's. Another interesting feature of NH rules is that the YOM plates do not need to be NH. I run 1930 VT plates, and other cars in the club have plates from several states. My antique plates are under the seat, and have been unwrapped.

To tack on what has been said about VA. You pay sales tax on what you say you paid for it and then a one time $50 fee for permanent antique plates or original year plates.
