what fits what I have a 1938 tudor standard and I was wanting to swap out the drive line. I'm asking what fits what in regards to 1935 to 1946 motors and transmissions. Can I match up a 35 motor to a 39 trans or a 36 trans to a 1946 motor. Please advise me. Thank you

Re: what fits what The engine and transmission combos you mention work together. The problem is in the drive shaft when you get into the earlier 10 splines and the later 6 spline pinions. You can't combine without converting the earlier 10 spline to a late '37 torque tube and drive shaft with a later 6 spline pinion. Or you make an adapter collar from a 10 spline drive shaft to the 6 spline pinion. Long answer for what maybe you really won't have an issue with.

Re: what fits what The better "option" MIGHT be, how about telling Us what combination (or combinations) you have access to, what you are maybe wanting to do (use) and THEN members here can advise or suggest the best and easiest route to accomplish what you are wanting to accomplish and or the "pitfalls" you might be facing.

Re: what fits what If you need the 6 to 10 spline adapter, you don't necessarily need to make your own : https://www.vanpeltsalesstore.com/48...ne_p_1868.html.

There you go. I wasn't sure if they were still being made. I run into this problem when I change rear gear ratios and the new ring and pinion gears are 6 spline. I had a healthy supply of the 37-40 rear ends so I was using the 6 spline torque tube and drive shaft conversion on my cars. I was told recently that the 3.25 gear set was out of stock, for how long I'm not sure but wow, I love that one. |
Re: what fits what Wouldn't the 1939 transmission with a 46 engine be the best setup for him ?

Sounds like a good combination. The 59A engine will provide a little more power. However, a '38 engine, 221 cubic inch, will work also with the '39 transmission. The only significant difference with the '39 transmission is the synchronizer. he can use a 1938 "78" series transmission case and install the '39 synchronizer. You can install the 1938 shift lever onto the shift tower. The 78 series case is a little deeper if you are planning to swap in a 29 tooth cluster, that becomes important. Although, I don't think there are many folks here getting that involved in a transmission rebuild. A few, not many. |
Re: what fits what I'm just asking for some combo's, I have a shot at a 35 motor as of right now with a 39 tranny. I like the idea of a 59A motor with earlier tranny. Thank you nfor your insight

Re: what fits what I'm liking that combo, not worried about drive shaft as of yet. thank you for the reply.

The '35 engine is not correct for your '38 car. The water pumps and heads are entirely different. Also the '35 engine will have babbitt rod and main bearings. You need to find a '37-'48 engine. They will have insert main and rod bearings. The '42-'48 engines have more displacement and a little more power. All of those are a direct placement into your 1938 Ford. |

Re: what fits what Hey, take me to court over it already. Jesus I made an error. Babbitt mains. F me...

Come on Seth, I tried to keep my original post short, sweet and as non confrontational as possible. Just trying to keep information straight my man!!!! NOT trying to be a Richard Cranium by any means. By the way did I tell about the southern rattlesnake oil I use in my Flatheads....I know you don't have that up in Illinois!!!! |
