New Tires yesterday.
 

I showed up at Budget at 8 am. Tires I ordered were in. Instead of the radials that were on the car when I got it, I wanted an easier steering and a higher gear ratio in back. The new tires are 4 to 5 inches higher and have a smaller footprint than the radials and gave me both desires. The stance of the car is nicer too Nice enough for me to remove the skirts.

Car make and model; tire size and brand? A little more specific information would make this a much better post. Pictures are even better.

I second the motion from Denny (Tubman), and wish to add that in my opinion our old fords look best with a tire that has a tall sidewall and a narrow tread width. Those 50-60 series things the kids like today are certainly not my cup of tea. So what are you running 7.50 x 16s on the back ? Your gain in height sounds like a lot.

I'm guessing its the car in your profile. 53 Merc? I've been running on p235-70x15 steel belted radials for ten years now. I like the fat tired blackwall look but they do ride a bit hard on gravel roads.

The only thing that would make me want to put bias ply tires back on any of my 5 old Fords would be if I NEVER was going to drive it again. The first thing I did after getting multiple Dearborn awards with my wagon was ditch the bias ply tires and driving the car became much more pleasant.

Glad i switched to modern tube less radials on my '37 when i discovered a leak in one of the 9 yr old bias plys.my car has been a daily driver and not a judged veh. as long as iv'e owned her. iv'e had enough of bias plys on the 50s /60s cars iv'e owned. Tom.

I have been running 215 85r 16 radials without tubes on my 1/2 ton jailbar woodie. Tall and skinny and very plentiful on the used tire markets as they have been standard issue on dually trucks for years. The second number (in this case 85) is a ratio of width/diameter where the higher this number, the more they have the look of a 6.50 x 16 which is what I'm aiming for. Diamondbacks for guys on a budget!

Well here is a red flag. I was under the impression that trailer tires are not legal in any state for use on passenger cars. Am I way off base here? Big safety concern.

I recently tried to buy one bias (ST205-75D15) trailer tire to replace just one….I wasn’t able to find one and ended up with a pair of radials….ST205-75R15….I think if you’re ever in an accident, having trailer tires on your car may increase your liability ……and yes that is a nice looking car!!……Mark

I'm with Ken my God get them things offa there, NOW... You have an accident and it is tire related, and especially if you hit somebody, after the State of Illinois got through reaming you (if it happened here) , you are going to be spending a fortune on attorney fees as the guy you hit is going to pick your bones clean in court and when HE gets done, them bleached white bones a-your's is gonna look like an old time prospector that died in the Mojave Desert crawling around looking for water:eek:

Trailer tires ! Yikes . Okay , I use them as rollers for around the shop . Thats all , never for a car on the road. Besides they weigh alot more which will hurt your stopping distance .
Original tires are generally much lighter .

What are you going to ask them? Quite frankly, any "tire place" that knowingly mounted trailer tires on a car that is being driven should lose their business license. They are endangering your life.

I've always been told trailer tires are stronger in the side wall for twisting when turning a tandem axle trailer, and thats about all the difference. 14 plys is overkill, but they wont ever blow up! I'd run em.
