Finish on Ford tools

What is the Finish on Ford tools? An almost transparent black. Very thin.

The description of the tool finish from the Early Ford V8 Club’s 1937 book is, “The small forged tools were Bonderized and dipped in a very thin black enamel.”

Bonderized is a form of Parkerizing used on assembly lines. I often do Parkerizing and it looks nothing like my tools. :confused:

When Lyn Stacy did his restorations on tool kits, which I thought were done very well, if thats what you mean? Was this as I remember asking him specifically what he used;
I have used Krylon 1601 ACRYL-QUIK spray for perhaps 15 years with satisfaction. It went more/less extinct, yielding to KRYLON K01601A07, similar…hard to find retail. I search online and buy 12-24 at a time…price is never great, but not prohibitive…$7.00-$9.00 each for a 12 ounce spray can, when shipping is factored in.

I believe "Bonderizing" is a process where the metal part is dipped in a hot dilute phosphoric acid solution to convert any rust to iron phosphate as a preparation step prior to painting. Ford did this to most sheet metal and other parts.
When I talked to Lin several years ago he said the original ford parts were dipped in a black paint solution after the prep step.
