36 Ford 68 light switch I am having issues with the light switch, old type can at bottom of steering column. I am thinking about changing to dash light switch, is this relatively simple to do. At the moment I turn the steering wheel and they come on but I cannot get high beam now.

Re: 36 Ford 68 light switch If the headlight switch is turning on when the steering wheel is turned it means that the horn wire tube in the center of the steering column is bent and catching on the steering tube. A tricky job to rectify if you are not pretty good at working on cars. You could fit a dash mounted headlight switch by extending the lower switch wiring harness up to the dash panel after disconnecting first from the lower switch. Again a tricky job if you are not good at auto electrics. Where are you in Australia ? Regards, Kevin.

Re: 36 Ford 68 light switch Al if your 36 is a sedan you will not get the horn / light switch tube out without loosening the entire steering box off the chassis.( unless you have an open car then you can just lower the convertible top). Take care removing the C clip at the very bottom as it’s a real pain in the butt when it goes flying.
Careful manipulation of the tube you can get it straight again, usually on a nice solid work bench( or the dining table while the wife’s out shopping!) Getting it back together is another pain and if you’re on your own you need to tape the light switch tight to the steering wheel in order to get that painful C clip back on to hold it all together. I bet if it’s bent someone tried to get it out without loosening the steering box first. It hits the roof before coming all the way out the steering tube. |
