Not Charging

Installed new battery. Brake light is not on. Putting lights on goes negative and bounces back and forth.
What can be the reason. Replaced cutout with diode type.

Re: Not Charging

The generator will not keep up with the current draw of the head lights when the engine rpm is low. Does the ammeter go to zero or charging when the engine is revved a little? Even at higher revs the generator will not keep up with the current draw of the head lights if the third brush is set up for daylight driving.

If you do a lot of driving at night you will want to install the focused beam LED head light bulbs. These are brighter and thus safer and draw much less current.

If your ammeter is jumping back and forth when the engine is at a fast idle then there may be something wrong in the generator or a loose wire somewhere. Are you sure you installed the new electronic cutout the correct way?

Will try turning cutout around. Did put with feet facing as photo indicates. Is it necessary to disconnect the battery before disconnecting the cutout and replacing.

Re: Not Charging

If you put the feet as the photo indicated then the cutout is correct. There are cutouts for negative ground and positive ground. Did you get the right one?

If you put the cutout in backwards it will discharge the battery pronto. If the ammeter shows charging with the head light off at a fast idle then the cutout is correct.

If your ammeter is still bouncing around at a fast idle then there is a loose wire or there is something wrong in the generator.

Was there something wrong with the old cutout? The mechanical cutouts work well if not worn out or broken.
