Some yrs ago I scored a nice '40 fire truck with a 95 hood emblem and a 99T vin no. I donated all the fire apparatus to our local fire museum and kept the truck to build a military G8T cargo. Also found a real '40 G8T that was a confiscated and converted Civilian trk to G8T. Tow hooks ,bumper reinforcement and blackout light were installed on the converted G8T. All this is now extra to me. Photos to prove this. the Fire truck chassis has 4,266 original miles on it, came from mid CA. Kube knows about these Merc engined '40s. Newc

Newc, Good find!
I could not find any records of how many Mercury engines were installed in trucks during the 1940 model run.
Interesting that the truck received the "99" serial number prefix.
Aluminum heads by some rare chance?

I know of a cut down one ton panel in a nearby junkyard (haven’t been there in a couple years to see if it still exists) that has such an engine. I haven’t looked at serial number to determine if it was oem.

From my research it became evident quite quickly that not all Mercury equipped '40 Fords received the "99" prefix. While they were supposed to, in reality, that simply did not happen consistently.

4226 road miles, huh? You gotta love these fire trucks; my '48 Seagrave had 2314 on it when I go it.

Was on my annual pilgrimage to Lynden Wa. for the Puget Sound Antique Tractor and Machinery Asso. gathering. 4 nights on a army cot with my faithful lantern burning diesel fuel siphoned from the 59's tank. Liking the sound of a '40 big truck with a factory installed merc. But oh wait... It wouldn't have the 4" crank, right?

GB, I don't know why you needed that new boat when you have such a fine outboard motor there.

Newc, are you saying this low mile fire truck is for sale? and Skip, the aerothrust prop motor is mounted on a bicycle. We can continue this subject elsewhere as I have hijacked this thread enough already....Sorry Newc.
