Oil pressure sending unit location in a 41 pickup

Hey all. On my 53 255 the oil sending unit was on the side of the filter. But on the 8ba it was down on the back of the block. When we first fired the new 255 I had it on the block which worker as it should but leaked do to a crack in the unit. It was a pain to remove it but we did and we put the pipe plug back in that port and put the sender back in the brass TEE on the side of the filter as mercury did. Now the needle never stops moving between 5 to 50. Yes , I stuck a mechanical gauge in and its a steady 65 lbs at speed and 25lbs at idle. Would the sender location make this radical movement happen? Thanks, Tim

First, Mercury and Ford had installed the sending units in the exact same position respective of year.
Second, your relocation shouldn't make much difference if you have a restrictor fitting (.060") installed and the air is purged from the line.
Third, are you 100% certain the sending unit is not defective?

Mike, with all respect you probably don't work much on "modern" cars. Mercury moved the oil sending unit up behind the oil filter starting in 1949.

I know they are on the filter on 337s looks like his sender has a weak
ground >no sealer or tape on threads.........

Mike,

Ford moved the oil pressure sending unit to the tee on the top of the oil filter starting in 1952.

Ken

So for my learning, Mercury moved them in '49 and Ford not until 1952?

Mike,

A correction to my previous comment. Ford actually moved the sending unit in 1951, not 1952. I sure wish Ford had done so at least one year earlier.:(

Well, thanks for teaching me something new.
I can't understand why the location was different for Ford / Mercury.

Re: Oil pressure sending unit location in a 41 pickup

OK, so I may have a bad sender. No there is no sealer of any kind on the theads and yes I have the factory restrictor. Dennis Carpenter has them but their made in China and buying used ones seems to be a pig and a poke as thats where the two I have came from. As for the locationon my 41 pickuo it would have been down on the block an on my 53 merc motor it was on the restrictor fitting. Thanks for the info. Tim
