When do you change your oil ? This may start a fire storm but I'm curious how often do you chance your oil.
Thanks, Al |
Re: When do you change your oil ? I change engine oil every 1000 miles

Re: When do you change your oil ? A question back to you...how frequently have you been doing oil changes up to now? In miles or months?
|
Re: When do you change your oil ? When it gets really dirty. I have a full flow filter so it takes a while.

Re: When do you change your oil ? I have been changing it around 1,000 to 1,500 miles.
Lately I've been driving about 2,000 miles a year. Today I used Rotella which is very popular with the hobby. T5, synthetic blend, 15-40 weight. |
Re: When do you change your oil ? I would think your current oil change frequency is fine based on your mileage. :)
|
Re: When do you change your oil ? Our last Model A we owned for 42 years. Drove car 3,700 miles in that period of time.
Oil changed once a year. It was really babied. Sold the first day it was on Hemmings for asking price. Really miss car, but getting to old. |
Re: When do you change your oil ? Grease every 500 miles or as close as I can get. Oil change depends on how I have done the miles. For short runs, 1,000 to 1,500 miles but on long outback runs, I watch the temperature gauge, speedo and oil pressure Day after day, they sit at 170F,50 mph and 26 psi (I made a pressure relief valve and aimed at 25 psi). Eventually, the pressure starts to drop - 25 - 24 psi but when it gets to 23 psi, I figure the emulsifiers in the oil are shot so I change it. Immediately, it returns to 26 psi. I can set my watch by that happening at 3,600 miles.
That engine has done about 70,000 hard miles towing a camper that weighs about 900 kg (one US ton) at 50 mph for at least 55,000 of them and is still going just fine. I see no reason to change my intervals. |
Re: When do you change your oil ? Oil is cheap, engines are not.
Not always practicable but I'd change the oil every fall so the engine sits thru the winter storage months with fresh oil. With the Model A 's I maintain, mileage is not important. |
Re: When do you change your oil ? I drive each of mine 300-500 miles a year. I usually change the oil every spring before I start driving them again.
|
Re: When do you change your oil ? Even though we drive through the winter here, I do a major service each spring and oil change is part of that. Then 1500 miles (I run partial flow filter), unless I’m on a long trip and then I’ll change just before I leave and again when I return. I use synthetic, generally Mobil 1 10-30 or 10-40, whichever I can find on sale somewhere.

Re: When do you change your oil ? I change the synthetic oil in my Model "B" engines once a year or every 2000 miles, which ever comes first.
|
Re: When do you change your oil ? Very interesting practices. Most owners have gotten away from the original 500-mile oil change requirement. With today's clean smooth roads, better oils, fuels and coolants it makes sense to space out oil changes.
Thank you all for your responses. Al |
Re: When do you change your oil ? It's a Model A you change it a quart at a time.........
|
Re: When do you change your oil ? A very high percentage of Model A's do not drive many miles annually. The best measure for when to change the oil is to do it once a year no matter how many miles you drive.

I do mine on a Friday! At about 700-1000 miles.

Re: When do you change your oil ? I live on a gravel road, so the oil gets changed every 500 miles, or every fall, regardless of how many miles are on the clock!
