34 Ford coupe converting rumble seat to trunk

I recently bought a nice all steel 34 Ford coupe that has a rumble lid. I want to convert it to a trunk. Looking for advice from someone who has done it or maybe just knows what is involved, Does anyone make 34 coupe trunk hinges? I am assuming I can use the same rear trunk lid and the original handle. I will need to find a latch mechanism and wondering how I fill the hole where the rumble handle is now. I will have a nice seat for sale and the rumble hinges IF I can figure out how to do this swap. Thanks for any advice. Paul in Indiana

I make the hinges, and a USA latch. Tom Bay (and I stock these parts) makes the lower drip channel and the trunk prop, he also makes the inner mounting brackets for the hinges. I stock the trunk prop shoulder bolt (same as A, from Snyders) the deck bumpers (Drake), the handle (import from Vintique), handle pad (Carpenter), and handle lockwasher (Snyders).

The location and hole for the handle do not change on the lid.

Terry, are you sure about the location and hole for the handle ? IIRC, the rumble lid opens from the top, whereas the trunk lid opens from the bottom.

Nick rotate the deck lid 180 degrees and the handle position moves from top to bottom. trunk has hinges at the top and rumble at the bottom.

I think that is correct! Looks like a new hole for the trunk handle and have to weld some metal in the current hole.

Steve Plucker wrote a very good article about converting a Model A rumble seat to a trunk. It may have some useful information as they are probably similar. I hope this link works, you have to scroll down to the article, it is in 3 parts. His website has been closed but this is from archives.

I have done mine, this is what I did! , (AS said) ,The stamping for the trunk hinges are at the top (inside ) ,The stamping for the rumble seat hinges are at the bottom (sides) , the handle moves to the opposite end eg rumble at the top and trunk at the bottom ,The lid stays were it is but the hole moves so welding is required ,The latches are different from each other ,This info is for the roadster

Re: 34 Ford coupe converting rumble seat to trunk

Yeah, some bad info being touted there.
I have a 33 5w coupe and I looked at the trunk lid. The pressings are universal. the locations for both types of hinges are in the inner panel. What aren't there are the necessary captive nuts and the required holes and slots for the latches and hinges. So while the pressings are the same the subsequent operations carried out on them are specific for both applications. Luckily for me mine is a trunk car which is my preference.

Edit: My trunk equipped car also has the locations in the vertical strengtheners in the trunk where the rumble hinges would be bolted on.

So there was a degree of commonality between the two types.

The hinge mounting had nut inserts installed, the trunk latch has the captive nuts in the latch itself, so just holes in the lid. Note that most 1933-34 coupe and cabriolet rumble lids were remote operated so did not have a hole for the handle, Roadsters did have an outside handle to open the lid.
