'28 roadster windshield stanchion removal I have a '28 roadster pickup and I have to replace the windshield. The glass was broken so removal was east. I can't get the windshield stanchions off of the pivot bolts in order to put it back in. Can anyone offer help?

Re: '28 roadster windshield stanchion removal If you mean you can't back out the two large slot head bolts from the lower stanchions, they can be a bear to unscrew. Short of heating the heads with a torch and destroying the paint on the stanchions, try using a heavy hammer and a solid steel chisel (no plastic handle), whose blade will fit into the bolt slots. Strike the chisel straight on to shock the bolt threads. Then use a LARGE, thick and wide flat blade screwdriver and turn the bolt to the RIGHT, as if tightening. THEN unscrew it. By tightening the bolt, you will break the bond between the bolt threads and the body stub threads.
If this fails, you may have to drill out the bolt heads to remove the stanchions. Once the remaining shanks have been drilled, tap the holes for the new mounting bolts. Marshall |
Re: '28 roadster windshield stanchion removal An impact screwdriver with the large bit might do the trick too.

Re: '28 roadster windshield stanchion removal I've tried the impact screwdriver and a big screwdriver but no go. I haven't tried heat yet for the reasons Marshall stated but I may have to resort to that. I thought I might be able to get the pivot screw/stud out but unsuccessfully.

Re: '28 roadster windshield stanchion removal I'm confused about what you're referring to as the "pivot screw/stud." Are you referring to the 2 screws that attach the stanchion to the top of the A-Pillar? Or? Do you have accessory pivoted/folding stanchions? Or are you referring to the windshield pivot to stanchion attachment?
