My Pops was in WWII on a submarine . . . he was one of the fortunate ones to make it back home and continue on with his life.

So many of our warriors and their families paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. God Bless them all!

My father flew in the Pacific and was preparing for the invasion of Japan when it ended.

There is a semicircle of 50 stone pillars at Pearl Harbor, each representing a sub which did not return.

Thanks Pete for posting. Wonder if our schools are teaching this history?
God Bless all those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice.
They must not be forgotten.

I didn't know that and I was stationed on Ford Island in the early 70s. To all who served:
Thank You for your service!

I well remember the news on the radio during WW2. We played with other kids "fighting the Nazis and Japs". Now it is China, Russia, Iran, North Korea along with others we need to worry about like homegrown threats.

Agreed with the comments. Thank you all who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Jim,

I can tell you in NJ, yes they still do teach it in US History II and let's hope it continues.

The threats from from foreign countries are not as bad as the threats that we face from in country people who are trying to get rid of the freedoms we have taken for granted.

I know some of you are disappointed when the events of WWII fade into the past and end up being forgotten by some. Unfortunately, these events now belong to the past and will slowly disappear.

To put it in perspective, consider these facts : At the end of WWII in 1945, The Civil War had been over for exactly eighty years. The current year is now 2025; WWII has been over exactly eighty years as well.

Time marches on.

Have the deepest respect for the gretest generation. My entire family served, my father in law was a carrier Hellcat pilot in the south Pacific. Was shot down twice but made it home.

Re: Memorial Day Weekend...

I would like to see the return of an important patriotic tradition we lost after the Korean conflict. The proud display of blue and red stars in the windows of homes was greatly appreciated and honored by all. Sadly, I’m afraid that a modern interpretation of the practice wouldn’t provide the respect that it garnered in times past.

I served as a tactical tanker pilot in 1964 and a staff officer in HQ 7th staff briefer 1967/68. So many friends did not return.

A new photo of my avatar came in today: showing 3 generations of the new owners in the yellow '30 Ford Cabby parading in Hamilton Va, Memorial Day parade. She served me in many parades as well.cc

I was lucky, I got drafted in 1957 when there was no war going on and they sent me to Germany where I had an office job. We were trying to keep the Russians from taking over western Germany. My father was too old for WW2 but two of his brothers served and made it home. My oldest son served in the Airforce and is retired on 90 percent disability and my youngest granddaughter is retired from the Marines on partial disability.
