8 ba into 35 coupe Hello.
First post. Searched many past posts but did not see the answer. Putting a 8ba motor out of a 49 ford coupe into my 35 5 window coupe. Will that oil pan work? All stock suspension in the 35. I have the mercy water pumps already from speedway. Going to order the new clutch kit also as I am using the 35 transmission for now. Thanks for the help in advance. |
Re: 59 ab into 35 coupe the 59AB is not what a 49 had originally,it would have had a 8BA
So it depends on what modifications were done to the 59ab to fit it into the 49 otherwise the front pulley would have interference issues ,the rest is pretty much bolt in The Ford parts books of the era had listings of the parts to fit later engine blocks into earlier cars. |
Re: 59 ab into 35 coupe Sorry.
My bad. Yes it's an 8 ba |
Re: 8 ba into 35 coupe With the 8BA you need to use the truck/pickup oil pan and the oil pickup tube to go with the rear sump pan.

Re: 8 ba into 35 coupe if you have a three row radiator, you MIGHT be able to put a belt driven fan behind the radiator. If it is a 4-row, like mine, you will need a 14 inch electric fan in front of the radiator. I also needed to install Red's heads to clear the steering box.

Re: 8 ba into 35 coupe 1 Attachment(s)
One thing that should be kept in mind when installing a 59A (or 8BA with truck pumps, for that matter) in a '35-40 Ford is that the front of the engine sits lower in those cars than in '41-'48 Fords. I am not an expert on this, but the Hurst Company certainly was when they were the "go to" source for engine mounts back in the day. Every Hurst catalog lists spacers to be used specifically when installing their standard engine mounts in the earlier cars. The Hurst mounts were a scientifically designed "system" that used a series of "engine" mounts that were to be paired to a set of frame adapters for each particular installation. Hurst specifically list "frame adapters" (spacers) to be used with '35-40 frames.

Re: 8 ba into 35 coupe An 8ba is 1 1/2" inches longer due to the distributor. Belts and water pump pulleys got moved ahead To clear the new dizzy. Lots of folks have done it, but it turns into a can of worms as to what fan will work, what radiator will work, etc. You can, ( I would) dress up the 8ba with 59a front parts and heads. looks proper, fits better

Re: 8 ba into 35 coupe 1 Attachment(s)
What cas3 stated above is how my 8ba engine was built by motor city flatheads, using their own 59a style heads and using a crab distributor, and 59a style cam and timing cover and water pumps. I’ve also installed an electric fan in front of the radiator. I also had to fabricate 2 plates bolted to the bell housing to allow the torque control rods to still attach to the engine ( an 8ba engine doesn’t need the 2 control rods due to the open drive line and different rear suspension. ) this is in my 35 roadster. Re: 8 ba into 35 coupe Danliveshere, that is one of the BEST LOOKING engines and engine bays I've ever seen.
Cheers ! |
Re: 8 ba into 35 coupe Thank You.
Just joined that one also |
Re: 8 ba into 35 coupe Thanks and that looks awesome!

Re: 8 ba into 35 coupe I will have to look at the radiator tomorrow.
Thanks |
Re: 8 ba into 35 coupe I’m not familiar with the 8ba oil pans, but I believe mine is from a truck with the large drain plug. I had no problems with the suspension in std height, and have now lowered the front with a dropped axle and modified stub axles . Still no interference issues, but the roadster hasn’t been out on the road yet, just on and off the trailer. When I first got the car 39 years ago the original engine had died so I put a 59 an engine in and drove 100,000 miles no problems on std height suspension, but I used a electric fan to get around radiator clearance issues. Re: 8 ba into 35 coupe Like Tubman said, I used a solid block of aluminum under each waterpump as a spacer. Otherwise, the oil pan would have been right on top of the crossmember.
