need to replace starter
 

I an needing to replace the starter on my 36 pickup. I would like to get some advice or opinions on what type to replace it with. Would you recommend staying with the old style bendix or going with the new slim style. The old style looks like it is going away.

I always use the original starters. They work just fine if the wiring is up to snuff. simple repairs like brushes and bushings can be done at home, For more complex work there is still some old school rebuild shops in most cities.

That is where I would start, too. pull it and pull it apart. clean, blow it out with air. ck connections. check motor windings continuity. service rotating assembly. ck bearings. drop oil on any metal to metal sliding/movement. I also like to put a battery charger on anything to start up next day that has been sitting for a week or longer. actually, operate yesterday, charge in am! to use next day. a topped off battery, showing full charge can make the difference in both quick start ups and improved starter performance.

Thanks for the advice guys, you are both right. I will pull the starter see how things look and go from there.

They're not difficult to service. Check also the brush springs. I had little mechanic experience and I was able to rebuild it myself. Check for past threads in the forum and there's plenty of troubleshooting tips.

Sending this to someone for repairs would be expensive. The shipping could possibly cost more than the repair work. The advice above is sound.

A few suggestions before condemning the starter if you haven't already tried.

Checking for having a good grounds and there's no corrosion between the oil pan and starter's plate. You can add an extra ground to one of the starter studs and connect it to a clean transmission bolt. It will make a whole difference.

the best overhauled starter can be close to worthless where there is a poor ground!! I have had to add extra grounds before, and even to some of my garden equipment. As stated: "It will make a whole difference"

I like a solid, clean ground OE style. but also like a ground to starter as an added cable from battery direct to the starter in circumstances where continuity is proving to be an issue. In my experience, in such circumstances if when cranking engine and no start, but as soon as starter key or? is eased off, and now more volts avail for ignition and she hints of wanting to start, always has been a ground problem!
