Horn Rod
 

Good morning! I had a horn issue the other day.Pressed the button and away it went! Had to pull the wires out. I’ll have to pull the light switch and see what’s going on. Am I correct thinking the spring On the horn rod is what keeps the horn from sounding? I never had to mess with it so I’m still green

The is rod is your ground for the horn. it could be under the button or at the light switch.

Under the button is a copper coated spring. It may have broken

It could be the wire where it connects to the "button" at the bottom of the rod. Try cleaning that area and carefully drying everything. Also the switch contact area. (low areas attract moisture - vibration makes it bead up.)

When you last drove the car was it a rainy day?

Almost every Model A Ford "dash" I own has a hole drilled for a pushbutton. Perhaps original not Ford's best thought out system?

Also check and see that where the rod makes contact to the centre wire on the connector that everything is centred up. if the lower part is off centre it will touch the housing making a connection causing the horn to blow. JP

I took the light switch off. Everything looked good their was a little corrosion I cleaned up
It seems to be working fine now. Either it was a little off centered and grounding out or that little bit of corrosion was an issue. Thankfully because trying to get that clip off the bottom of the horn Rod wasn’t goingnto happen without a fight! LOL Thanks for the advice!! Happy Easter!

FWIW, my horn button has a habit of sticking a bit cockeyed in its socket and not releasing completely. Often happens when some bozo cuts in front of me and I really lean on it. Quite embarrassing. I find I have to agitate it to get it to pop out. I haven’t had to yank the wires from the horn itself yet. I suppose that someday I’ll have nothing else to do on the car (hah!) and will finally pull the horn rod, disassemble it and fix it with a stretched or new spring.

I did notice however my darn steering column is a bit lose. My advance Rod fell off the other morning. I turned the column and straightened it out. Now I wonder if that contributed to my issue. It can be very embarrassed depending on where the horn decides to alert the media Hahaha. Just makes me smile after the embarrassment fades. Happy Motoring!!
