Clutch replacement
 

I purchased a 47 ford deluxe with a flathead 8. It needed a new clutch
I had replaced clutches before but not that old
I pulled the engine and replaced the clutch pressure plate and throw-out bearing. I reinstalled the engine and connected the clutch linkage
But when I stepped on the pedal it went down to the floor. Unfortunately I did more research after the replacement and saw the detail about adjusting the 3 screws on the pressure plate. Before I pull the engine again does anyone know if those screws could take up that much slack to bring the pedal up or do I have another problem

Did you install the clutch pedal return spring?

How is the free play at the pedal?

My clutch peddle goes to the floor when I shift.

First of all, we need to assume you installed the clutch disk, too. And hopefully you benched up the new and old parts and determined total height of the 3 components, new and old... more or less same. a visual/measure, too. And... you got in the clutch return spring.

2) you stepped on it and it went to floor... lightly, or with a sense of normal pressure, but all the way? It fell to floor and stayed there on its own or returns, too? did it stop before you got to floor with original clutch in?

Been a while, but I thot the 3 bolts in pressure plate release fingers for adj to ensure even loading of throw out brg face and sides when sliding on trans hub sleeve when applying clutch pedal pressure to release the disk's load. (for shifting)

I know from exp it does not take much adjustment to change the pedal throw, clutch side. FH V8 to Model A trans, all bolted up! no free play on clutch pedal. A not driveable. flat washer at each clutch bolt hole, tween flywheel and pp to space clutch up and out... and then had 3/4" clutch pedal free play. (ooh-rah!~) and it never slipped and gave me many good reliable miles.

you do not toch the three screws .make sure the disk is not in backwoods .make sure the bolt thar goes through the fork is there or not broken.

With the inspection cover removed from the top of the transmission bell housing, are you seeing proper movement of the throw out bearing ? Are the bushings in good condition where the equalizer shaft meets the ball that’s mounted on the frame rail? What year engine you have ? I would not adjust the screws on the fingers.

I replaced clutch disk and throw out bearing
The old clutch was good. The pedal was high
The only problem was chatter
Now I step on the pedal with no resistance all the way to the floor
I had assumed after reading more about the clutch installation that the screws were the problem so I hadn’t looked for any other problem

I replaced the disc. It’s all free play with the pedal right to the floor

It sounds like a serious case of the wrong parts. Not a rare occurrence these days.

Did your orig pressure plate match the new one, i think there is two different lengths, might be tractor verse car

I think he did not replace the PP, only the disc and TO bearing.

The new pressure plate matched the old one

Have you adjusted ( lengthened) the rod on the pedal to the equalizer arm ?

there has to be a clue in that condition somewhere. I never heard of such a clutch to do that off the clutch pedal, if properly hooked up!~ :confused:
