At the last car show

The last car show I was at, a man was examining my engine and wondered how the two cams stayed in sync seeing they were not driven by a toothed belt. I informed him those were the dual water pumps, he told me that makes sense now.

Re: At the last car show

Should have told him that Ford engines required precise accuracy in synchronizing the cams, so they are internally geared.

Obviously, born after the flathead era.

Yep: At a show with a flathead eng to show; the youngsters marvaled at the 4 spark plugs per side and only 3 exhaust ports. RG #85 Newc

Re: At the last car show

After a race, I had my dirt modified with the early hemi sitting on the front stretch so the spectators could wander around and look at the cars. One dad pointed to the hemi and said to his pre-teen son. "See? That's a flathead. You can tell because the spark plugs are in the middle of the head".

I've also had people say a flathead has to be a V6 because of the exhaust pipes.

It makes me feel alot better when at a show with what ever vehicle that I can leave the young "spectators" with some new car brain knowledge and not just smoking tires and eye candy.

Surprisingly in todays world of the internet and "smart" phones this knowledge is still unknown, thank goodness we got Fordbarn:D

I'm too much of a smart a// I would have told him they were dual flux capacitors. One for going forward in time and one for going back in time. Climb in and let's hit 99mph.

You want to hear the questions about our flathead, they ask why 8 plugs per side and only. 3 exh pipes
An update, we have not used our rail for 4 years since my loving Wife Carol passed away, but in the next couple weeks it will come down to the shed and get ready to use it again.
for your info, last pass was 9.25 at 142 mph

At a car show a teen told me he could tell my car (32 with flathead/Edelbrock heads) had a Corvette engine because it had "finned valve covers". All I said was yes, those do cover the valves. My Ardun car brings quite a list of what others think the engine is!

That's not even unique to Ford flatheads, they obviously aren't familiar with early Cadillac or Oldsmobile OHV V8's either.

At a car show flea market, there were a pair of '36 horns. I told the owner that they were for '35 Ford. He said "No, because '36 was the first year Fords had horns."

The last swap meet I was at, I was wearing a baseball cap as normal with its bill forward, shading my eyes. A teenage kid came up to me and asked me why I was wearing my cap backward...

Best I ever got with my 41 was - "So, have you had it since new?"
