Stromberg 97 help

3 Attachment(s)
I have a large logo 97 that looks like it has been rebuilt sometime in the past due to how clean it is and it looks like it has been yellow dichromate refinished. However, upon disassembly I noticed that the bottom part of the venturis where it slides into the cast iron base has corroded at some point and is partially missing. See attached pictures .

I have read that some say that the main body of this is junk and needs to be replaced because of this.

Does this affect the function of the carb so much that it will no longer at least work”o.k.”?

Would this kind of defect cause it to run rich and foul the spark plugs because it somehow messes up the vacuum signal in the venturis?

I have read, but don’t exactly remember, I know it causes some sort of disturbance in the air flow through the carb. What happens if the choke butterfly assemblies are removed?

I have one that’s like that. Been running it for 25 years.Cant say that it’s ever caused a problem. Give it a try and see if it works or not.

Re: Stromberg 97 help

Should be ok, try it. Do make sure none of the pieces are loose and can fall off. See if you can find the length of the skirts and if yours are long cut or grind yours down

If it runs rich the float level could be high.

How to set float uncle max.

I would worry that some would fall off. I would trim the thin stuff off. Should work fine.

Wouldn't trimming it adversely affect the venturi effect?

given some careful craftsmanship... and that, that was the route the engine builder (carb) chose to go... I would say Yes. If that was my project and I chose to do that, I would let the JB set up for min 72 hrs, preferably for 1 full week!

JB Weld is fuel-proof once it fully sets and stabilizes.

The carb bodies are not that hard to find . . . if it was mine, I'd just find a better one. But, hey . . . I'm a bit of a perfectionist. ;)
