The straw boss said "Fill your shovel or fill your coat" Back in 1967 I started working for my local small town road crew on summer vacation. Did this for five summers and other short vacations. Graduated from high school on a Thursday night and was tracked down by the first selectman Friday night with the job offer. Two questions, do you have decent shoes and we work on Saturday. OK? I was puzzled by the shoe question. He knew better as I was working at a local dairy farm 7 days a week and he saw me frequently. He laughed and said in the 30's on WPA jobs new hires we admonished not to show up with their "Dancing Shoes" lest they be sent home. There was always other men waiting to work for 10 cents an hour.


Great times working with the old timers that were working for the town just for something to do after retiring from big construction companies. Lots of great stories about the olden days. ML

I had an older neighbor years ago who had a job driving dump trucks when he got out of the army after WWII. Whoever he worked for had all different makes of trucks that were assigned by the seniority of the drivers. He told me they were ranked like this :

1. GMC
2. Dodge
3. Ford 6
4. Ford V8
5. Chevrolet

I think it was a county job; that may explain the lack of the "higher price" units.

No frontend loader or steam shovel in sight. Back-breaking hand labor. Ugh! The good 'ol days were not so good.

So they’re just clearing a small landslide. They’ll be done in the afternoon and back to drinking rotgut before dusk. Piece of cake, good money, honey.
