Paint Steering Column Notches?

The notches for the control rods on the column - do you all paint that face knowing they will be rubbed off but it will leave paint deep in the notches?

Mask them off?

To cut back on the wear and make the levers stay where put, stretch a length of rubber or plastic hose over the levers where they rub against the notches. Experiment with different hoses until you find something that you like. Perhaps heat shrink tubing?

I file the grooves deeper with a small riffler file and then normal paint.
