46-48 radiator mounting

My 47 ford coupe had nothing when I got it so I'm kind of flying blind here. On the side of the radiator do I just need a carriage bolt on the radiator and run that through the sheet metal parts?
Ichecked the diagrams and they don't show anything about hardware

Re: 46-48 radiator mounting

Short carriage bolt will work on the sides. There was also a special clip which I don't have a picture of, but it will hold with just the carriage bolt. On the bottom a bolt goes thru a spring. Most of the vendors have a kit for that.

Thanks for confirming. I just got the spring bolt kit for the bottom. Now for the fun part lol

Here are my hardware parts awaiting cleaning and painting. Only one strap is pictured as the other is on the car and you will see that in pic 3. Small carriage bolt heads slide into the fitting on the radiator sides and then go through the strap and secured with nut. Other end of strap is bolted to bracket under the hood. Nothing screwed into sheet metal. The slotted hex head nut and drilled bolt and spring and cotter pin come up through the radiator mounting foot bracket on each side. My Model T experience is telling me to place a small leather strip or inner tube pad between radiator and mounting foot.
Hope this helps visualize what you need.

signsup, if you look closely, you can see the 42 Ford brackets are different than 46-48. The 46-48 brackets were listed as the service replacements in the green bible (1950). Also "U" channel was superseded to a 1946 part number. I have a spare set of 46-48 brackets if you can't secure your radiator. Part of the fun of having a 42 is one-year parts.

Mine is mounted like 51woodie's.

Carriage bolt goes head first thru the keyhole shaped hole in the support and into the keyhole shaped hole in the radiator, then slid down the slot and tightened (you might have to reduce the head diameter of the carriage bolt).Radiator feet sit on the tabs on the bottom of the support and are secured with the spring & bolt. Like in this picture from Ford's book.

Re: 46-48 radiator mounting

Appreciate the offer on the radiator straps, but it is the OP who has the 46 Ford. I took pics of the straps and hardware off my 42 Mercury which held the current radiator in place. So, I will just replace them after cleaning them up. The OP may or may not have any of the haardware and could use your straps.

Curious as to how you have that hood support set up; like how seats on the hood when up and how it is stowed when down.

Thanks
Rich

Re: 46-48 radiator mounting

It is pure Bubba, but it works for me. My springs are weak, the hood will rise and stay open . . .maybe but I don't want my head or hands under there when they don't. So I was figuring something out in my head and was going to bend some rod stock into what I was envisioning. I reached into my scrap metal bin and there was some sort of turnbuckle on a rod that was bent at one end 90 degrees. It was the perfect height. I ground off one side of the surnbuckle and used a inner fender screw mounting point to attach the turnbuckle end and a washer and nut on the underside of the fender and it ain't going anywhere. It meets the hood at an inner sheet metal brace that I drilled a 3/8" hole in and it fits right in and has a little bend to it so the rod can't slip out of the hole. I need to work on the hold down storage, but right now, it folds down and fits between my battery and the inner fender and stays there till needed. I think I can put some sort of wire clip at that location to hold it down a little more factory looking. Only on one side of the hood, but it is metal rod and carries the hood weight just fine.
