Hello all, before I put my Nellie ('31 Model A Tudor) away for the winter I had developed a gas leak where the gas line connects to the coupling to run a Model B carburetor (which came on the car). So over the winter I replaced the brass couplings I purchased from Snyder's. Today I decided to re-mount the carburetor and try to fire up old Nellie, but now I had a bad drip from the drain plug, so I tried to tighten it with no luck and again I took the carburetor off and this time discovered the reason I couldn't tighten the drain plug was that the threads in the carb body had worn and the drain plug wasn't long enough to grab any of the threads further up the body. My first question is can I use a longer bolt say a 3/8" x 24 x 1/2" or will I fowl something up inside the lower body?? My second question is can some one recommend where I could purchase a quality rebuilt model B or any reliable carburetor in case mine can no longer be used. I truly appreciate any information or guidance.

Welcome to the Ford Barn. Yes you can and put a nylon/fiber washer on it. You can retap to next size

Welcome to the Barn! Also, with a Model B carb (it will work) but to get the most out of the carbs power you will need to either:

1) bore out an A manifold to match the throat of the carb
2) get a Model B manifold. The downside to this is that now all of the adjustment rods will be out of alignment.

Do this and that engine will wake right up!

Do any of the vendors sell Model B carbs? The Renner's and Bert's sites don't list them.

You might try a new plug, some have longer and better threads than others.
You can also make a new oversized plug using the strainer plug and gasket from a model A Zenith carburetor. This will require retaping the existing drain plug hole. You must not interfere with or obstruct the holes entering and exiting that area. Another idea is to find a good used lower half, sometimes they can be found on eBay. One with a broken ear is a good candidate. The lower halves are interchangeable.

Also I don't follow how the 3 brass adapter fittings were the cause of your original leak?
I can guess that the tube nut and ferrule could be an issue but how where the adapter fittings an issue? They use pipe threads at 2 of the joints and a taper into the carb.
