Re: Alternator wiring So building a car that has not been wired as yet. Has a GM column would it be better to get a GM alternator and go that route? I have bot a GM and Ford alternators so using one or the other makes no difference other then it has a Ford engine in it.

Re: Alternator wiring Most universal wiring kits are GM wiring.
i guess I would just see which one needs the least amount of work for brackets and belt alignment. |
Re: Alternator wiring Being the town electrician, I’m the guy who gets called when anyone wants to rewire their car-for free.
Get something with the GM column connector. The turn signals, brakes, possibly high/low, and flashers all go thru there. It’s the most confusing wiring in the whole damn car. Most of the rest is either spades or ring terminals. The odd Ford bullet here and there, but you can buy those (I’m thinking of the headlight/parking terminals, heater blower motor, etc.). No big deal. No matter which alternator you use, I’m not a fan of 1 wire. I like the idiot light to work (sometimes I’m the idiot) and I like the voltage delivered at the battery to be right. The 3 wire connection does all that. Any good set of instructions will have additional drawings for a variety of ignition and alternator connections. Reading them is your friend. |
