Any 68-C owners with a recent appraisal or sale? Need some comps
 

I'm dealing with an issue with my 68-C where I'm in need of reliable comps and/or an estimate of the general value of 68-Cs these days. If anyone has that kind of information and would be willing to share it, I would be grateful. If you prefer to share it privately, that is fine and I certainly will not discuss it with anyone publicly. As an attorney I take that kind of confidence very seriously.

Background: I'm 42 and I inherited this car from my dad when he passed in 2016. He purchased it in 1997 and it was ours. I sort of joke but mean it seriously that we found our meaning of father and son while working on that car. This past July it was parked in a garage when someone backed through the garage door and hit it doing significant damage.

Y'all gave me some excellent advice at the time, which I listened to, and the car ended up with Brent Terry in Tennessee. It's just been sitting there, though, because the other party's insurance hasn't made any headway.

Recently they came back with comps, one set of which were all Roadsters, another was a Cab but not a 68-C, and another was a 68-C project car with obvious rust under the paint, dilapidated engine, cobbled together interior. Not that mine's a concours level car, but it was very well cared for, drove beautifully and reliably, idled smooth, had some chips in the paint and some wear on the interior but was otherwise a nice car. I think I have pictures on my profile if you're interested and I put a couple at the bottom here.

Anyways, I'm growing concerned that the lady's insurance is going to continue to try and sandbag the valuation. When it comes to 68-Cs, I've heard numbers high and low, but nothing I've felt was reliable (either it's just hearsay or it's a sale from 20+ years ago). I'm just trying to get some idea for a basis of valuation in 2025 for what a decent, running, driving 68-C is worth. To me, this car is priceless and I won't let it go. But "priceless" doesn't count and I need a sanity check on where I should anchor my expectations.

Did you try searching Hagery? You get their #3 condition evaluations for free, it's a good starting point and a reputable insurer/evaluator for the insurance company.

Check your state laws on the time an insurance company has to settle your claim. See if your state has an insurance commission you can complain to for them not acting in good faith. The mere threat usually gets them in line since they don't want a black mark from the state. Lastly and most expensive is an attorney. Did you have comprehensive insurance on the car? Here in CA if the other company is non responsive you get the car fixed on your policy (paying the deductible) and they in turn sue the other company. You get your deductible back first from any settlement.

Do you not have your own collector car insurance? Here in MA, your insurance pays the claim and then goes after the "other guy". Having an agreed upon value is helpful in this case.

It's called suborgation

I think I recall something about this accident in the fall of 2024. This has gone on long enough. Go get an attorney and tell him/her to get their fee back too. Don't settle, pick a shop let them pay for the shipping, and pay the invoices. all of them!

All that would be great in a perfect, fair world
Big ins is so hard to beat. They keep in going for years!
They can total the car out at FMV. An older resto might appraise at half or less of repair cost.

Who is the car insured with and what do they say? This can help a lot of folks take stock of their insurance company. Your insurance company should step in and if they won't then probably several people may want to change if they are insured by the same company.

I found two Cabriolets on Bring a Trailer. One did not meet reserve but you could contact the owner to get their opinion. The other one sold for $27,000 but it was a while ago. Once I found the two I did not search further, but a further search may find more.

Here is an ad for a Cabriolet near Raleigh, North Carolina with an asking price of $24,560. One fiberglass fender, Mitchell overdrive, and Model B engine with high compression head. The owner has no space to keep the car so is selling it.

In the last year or so, there have been two nice 68C sold. One was a former award winner.
They went in the $33-36k range. I don’t have any documentation but could privately direct to one of the buyers if he approved such.

I have 3 , 1 unrestored that needs surgery but is totally doable, it is an 8,500 car, the other is an excellent unrestored car that has had some work done to it and is super solid. I would peg it at 16. An easy restoration if I can say that about a cabriolet . I bought a restored point car 458 masters class for a reasonable sum, right place right time. It’s hard to find them where they don’t need something. Just part of Model A’s . I currently have them insured through Hagerty. Their value on the top car is low in my opinion.
An average well restored car would be in the 22k-45k plus range.
Restoring these takes great patience, expertise, time, and money, and more .

I have my 30 Cabriolet insured through Hagerty for $24K. Could I restore it for that? Nope
I know that because I have been restoring a 1951 MG TD from the ground up that I bought in boxes for 17 years now. "Bought in boxes", lets just say alcohol was involved. I already have triple in the MG for what its worth and still have engine and interior to go. Please don't drink and and buy folks, you might cause a family to have a sudden vacation on your behalf.

adjustments can be made, same as house appraisal.


I have both a B and C and the difference may be 5k for # 3 cars.
