Fitment of 1936 Rear Bumper 3 Attachment(s)
In my efforts to mount a luggage rack on the rear of my 1936 Fordor Sedan. I finally found what I believe to be original 1936 bumper brackets, the edges are rounded not flat, and the ends are curved to accommodate the full fold over 1936 bumper ends. The brackets I am replacing are aftermarket and shortened to pull in the bumper. Original brackets set the bumper about 10" out, shortened brackets set it out about 5".
Problems encountered: 1.) Original bracket bolt holes seem farther apart than the bumper bolt holes, (See photo - Bumper Bracket vs Bracket Bolt Holes). I can with some effort force these, but not the best fit. Maybe I can get them bent a bit. 2.) After mounting the brackets and test fitting to the car, the bracket mounting holes are about 3" to wide, (See photo - Bumper Bracket Test Fit). In photo, right bracket bolt is inserted into bumper brace, left mounting hole is about 3" left of where it needs to be, (circled in photo) 3.) I included a photo with both sets of brackets for comparison, (See Photo - Orig Bumper Brackets vs Shortened Repo). You will also notice the shortened repo brackets are not curved on the outer ends. I did not build this car, so not certain of any potential modifications to this section of the body, but I can't imagine why anyone would. Was there by chance differences in the bumper bracket by body style in 1936? Any thoughts or suggestions on what might be the issue? I'd like to mount the trunk rack but can't if I cannot get the bumper moved out further. Thanks |
Re: Fitment of 1936 Rear Bumper It appears your bumper brackets are 1935 version....36 curve downwards at the outer ends.

Re: Fitment of 1936 Rear Bumper Brain, the originals at the top of the comparison photo, which are the ones I am attempting to use, are correct and are curved at the ends.

Re: Fitment of 1936 Rear Bumper Try fitting the brackets loosely to the body first then the bumper to the brackets. On my previous 35,36 and 33's is how I did them.

Re: Fitment of 1936 Rear Bumper Looking at the photo it appears your bumper is too straight, should have more curve in it. As said above, bolt brackets to body first then bolt bumper to brackets.

Re: Fitment of 1936 Rear Bumper Thank you "deuce lover", "V8ER" and "wamnram". started with everything loose and was able to get it installed. I forget how flexible the bumper actually is, thought I would save myself some trouble by assembling the brackets and bumper first...wrong!
