Rear Hood Hinge - Threads Stripped

Is there a recommendation on how I could reinstall my rear hood hinge? The threads for the bolts no longer hold the bolts in.

I think that there are captive nuts underneath. Unfortunately you have to take the tank out to get to them. One suggestion I have just off the top of my head is to fill the holes with a strong epoxy like JB Weld and then drill and tap for the bolts.

The caged nuts are pretty inaccessible but you might try drilling out the nuts to the next larger size and JB Welding new nuts to the original nut cages . Would be A LOT EASIER if the tank was out!

I think that this kit would solve your problem as seen on Snyders web site.

use a longer bolt and put a nut on the bottom

That's the common fix I've seen.I have a car fixed like that.Spin the longer screw down through, and reach up underneath and screw the nut on.The side pressure from the stripped out nut should hold the screw tight enough to turn the nut on finger tight. If not have somebody else hold it,or set a magnet on the screw heads.I generally don't take that piece off to remove the hood.I pop the hood stay rods off the radiator, and rock it ahead 3/4 of an inch.

Drill and tap to the next size screw, you may have to alter the new screw head to fit hinge

That's what I did on mine. I used a socket with an extension and tightened the nut while my wife held the screw on top. Really wasn't hard, just took 2 people.

I took a short piece of flat stock, measured off the CtoC distance of the two holes, drilled and tapped it for the mounting screws, mixed up some jb weld, applied it to the bar stock and stuck it up under the cowl, put the screws in until the jb weld cured and then I could install the hood and bracket. Might be easier than putting two nuts up under the cowl?

That's what i would do.

Could you drill from the top and use a nutsert? would it be hidden?

Nutserts (or Rivet Nuts as we call them around here) are an excellent suggestion. You can get a set for only the size you need instead of buying the whole set if you're cheap...

On my '31 I originally thought those were stripped out as well. Then I realized that the doofus who "restored" the car had installed screws with a 10-24 thread and nuts instead of the 12-24 that they actually are. A bit of futzing around and chasing the threads in those captive nuts and voila, works as it should!

The rivet nut tool looks interesting. I'm going to see if I can do a less invasive approach (perhaps the longer bolt) and go from there

Re: Rear Hood Hinge - Threads Stripped

I took a look at what I have and there's no room for me to add a nut or the repair kit they sell without taking the gas tank out; the tank comes out too far for me to have any room.

If I were to use the rivet nut, should I put the hinge first and rivet nut that? If I add the rivet nut first, I don't believe the hinge will sit flat.

Don't listen to what I was saying up there. I didn't understand what people were talking about at first but realized that I had to crawl into the cabin and go behind the gas tank. I found that the captive nuts had freed themselves. I ended up cutting out the old bracket and adding nuts and lock washers where the screws go in. Thanks for your suggestions, though!

So, does anyone see why the rivetnut/nutserts would not work?
