The ruined a nice '51 Mercury in that movie, not a '49.

Re destroying a nice car to make a movie:

After Gene Hackman became a star in "The French Connection", he got the starring role in some cheap-thrills movie. I didn't watch the whole movie, only recall the opening sequence. He is driving a very nice shoe box Ford woodie wagon, being chased by the bad guys. They had him speeding thru warehouses, scraping the sides off the car, etc. They literally showed that wagon being ripped apart! They probably destroyed several wagons to film that sequence! Made me sick! There aughta be a law against that. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Anyone recall the name of that disgusting movie? I don't recall.

I found it. "Target" 1985, with Gene Hackman & Matt Dillon. Spy thriller.

Alan, Thanks for doing the research.

Spooky coincidence: #6 was posted on Wednesday evening. Thursday morning news reports Gene Hackman just died suddenly, of not-natural cause. Investigations underway.

A 1950 Merc woody met a fiery end after a few episodes of the Mod Squad. Series from the late 1960s. At the time I didn't think much about it but just imagine how much interest there would be in a car like that now.

Speaking of Thunder Road, here is Robert Mitchum singing the title song. Not a bad job, IMO.

just recently watched (again) French Connection. last nite on news about his passing... said they ruined 3 cars doing the chase scenes... and all had sirens on to help warn the other cars!! 1971! wonder if it would all be CGI these days... ?
