voltage regulator What are your experiences with the Model "A" voltage regulators. Before I purchase one I would appreciate any input.

Re: voltage regulator I have the regulator in the cutout can. Have had it for ten years, it works great. Keeps battery topped off without overcharge. Also adjusts for nightime driving. Make sure you follow the 3rd brush setting instructions.

Re: voltage regulator I have an older Fun Projects regulator on my driver car. It works fine and prevents overcharging the battery. The FP products are no longer available. Hopefully Jeff Stevenson will have a Model "A" (positive ground) regulator available in the near future.

I've been using and installing Mike Hill's EVR for quite a while now. I've probably installed 10 of them so far. It mounts internally and replaces the 3rd brush assembly. They work great.

Re: voltage regulator 60 years ago we would add a standard (clunky) 6 volt Ford regulator and wire the field windings to it, eliminating the third brush. The regulator would be hidden somewhere if we wanted to keep the car stock looking. But back then the Model A was just an old car, so many times the regulator was mounted on the firewall.
It is nice that now you can buy the regulators that are hidden inside the generator. |

Re: voltage regulator He makes one for the powerhouse and long generator, both 6 volt. I run one in my '31 model A and '35 flathead V8 generators. They are the best thing since sliced bread :-)

Hi All - This is Mike Hill and I am making Electronic Voltage Regulators (EVRs) for the Model A powerhouse and long-style generators - 6V positive ground. The EVR mounts within the generator case.
The EVR regulates the current to the field coils to maintain a maximum generator output of 7.1V - which is the maximum charge voltage for a 6V battery. At a charge voltage above 7.1V, the battery electrolyte starts to gas off. The EVR preserves battery life, mitigates cable/post corrosion and maintains the original and authentic look of the Model A engine compartment (versus a modern alternator). The regulator I sell is the same basic design that Tom Wesenberg sold for over 20 years and is based on a well known voltage regulation circuit. I have made a few additional improvements. I give full credit to Tom for his ingenuity and for all the help he gave all of us in the Model A community over the years. I have attached a paper which describes the history of Model A EVRs, how they work and why they are beneficial. Any feedback would be appreciated. I charge $80 USD for the EVR plus shipping (same price as Tom used to charge). I can offer bulk pricing deals to clubs. I am building these as a hobby to help out the Model A community.
