Re: How to align Ford Model A Front End. How to use a Toe-In Gauge
2 Attachment(s)
A simple toe in gauge can be made with 3 pieces of 2 X 4 and some screws. Cut two pieces of 2 X 4 to reach to the hub cap and then a longer one that will reach across the tread about 8 inches longer than outside the tires. Screw the shorter 2 X 4's vertical to the longer 2 X 4 so that they have about an inch clearance with the outside of the tires. Then screw two screws at the same height into the shorter 2 X 4's so that they just touch the outside of the tires at the rear. Mark the tires were the screws just touch and move the board out of the way and roll the car backward so that the marks are at the same height in the front. Place the board in front and position it so that one screw is touching a tire at the marks. The gap in the other screw is your toe in.
Most instructions say to roll the car forward instead of backward. If you want to check the measurement, roll it forward and check that the screws are just touching in the back. If everything is tight in your front end, such as the wheel bearings, the toe in measurement should be the same forward or backward. If not, then you have some work to do.
I find that it is much easier to measure the toe in on the outside of the tires rather than climbing under the car to measure it on the inside of the tires.
