Speedometer gear

I just replaced the the torque tube seal, race and bearing, but when i put the speedometer gear back in and put the snap ring back on, is it normal for that gear to be able to slide back and forth about 1/4"?

Re: Speedometer gear

Big washer with little holes around it between the bearing and gear?
Was the seal a total metal encased seal like original or a modern seal that just matches the inner and outside diameter ?

Picture from parts book.
The original seal also was the thrust surface for the bearing—- if the seal is all open the bearing could move deeper

Yup the seal is totally encased, I bought it from Brattons, seemed like a good quality seal. I also got the washer with the holes in there between the gear and the bearing. I am stumped. The bearing seems to be at the right height. It isn't any lower that the top of the race
