Looking for body number plate I'm looking to get a Briggs body number plate with my SN stamped. Does anyone offer well made repos?
I saw some older posts to contact [email protected] however have not received a response in weeks. |
Re: Looking for body number plate Some of the Model A parts suppliers offer blank repos, you'd need to stamp your own numbers.

Re: Looking for body number plate Gwyn passed away and Larry sold the stamping tools.
Which model do you need it for. |
Re: Looking for body number plate See Bratton's Part Number 26720.

Re: Looking for body number plate I need it for a 30'
Tracking the usual resellers have these; however heard they are of low quality. |
Re: Looking for body number plate The original tags used an acid etch process. All the new ones are just silk screened onto a flat plate.
You can DIY too. This is using brass but you can do aluminum or steel too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Op6H0C18tM vinyl mask https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zavCqw2JDU |
Re: Looking for body number plate I take the blank tags to a trophy shop who sets up one of his machines and makes it look like Henry put the numbers. I also have had him date the tags for the horns I restore, Sparton tags.

Re: Looking for body number plate What my real problem is, is my original tag is painted over. If I pop the tag off and dip it in paint stripper would that remove the original markings? I'm not super familiar with acid etching.

Re: Looking for body number plate I would remove it from the firewall and soak it in hot water and maybe you can peel the paint off. To remove the rivets go inside the firewall and hit them with a hammer.

Re: Looking for body number plate Quote:
Temperature change is your friend. The expansion of acrylic (plastic) is like 7x the underlying metal surface. This is why paint frequently "bubbles" or "cracks" applied over a metal substrate without etching/surface preparation. And a solvent solution (i.e. soap in water) will help break the adhesion. Re: Looking for body number plate remove the tag and soak it in some Lacquer thinner. it should peel the Paint off. My Victoria body had been painted four times. and I stripped the tag. over 40 years ago.
I need to add DO NOT use a wire brush it will scratch the tag |

Well, I'm getting there but not as clean as I would've liked. Was able to remove the paint however the primer which almost feels like body filler is caked on there. Had to use a blade to scrape off the surface even after soaking it in lacquer thinner.
I don't see any black on brass repro tags out there either. |
Re: Looking for body number plate I buy repro tags on ebay- 20 at a time. cost about 20. each
stamp my own and keep then a bit imperfect. |
