problem with my column on my 1956 T bird

Hey guys I am having a problem on my 1956 T bird Steering unit. When I started to change to a smaller wheel I notice that I can hold the signal arm and move it back and forth. This is not right as the chrome cover should be in a fixed position. Is some thing else loose. I do not see any holes on the chrome piece other than the once that the signal arm goes into. Maybe some one can guide me that has taken these units apart or tell me why this unit is moving like it is as I cannot see behind it to figure it out Many thanks for any help on this Tom

I am surprised that no one has helped you yet.

You are describing the turn signal switch stalk?

Below are ILL.s of the steering column and switch mount -

Tom, you need to buy the CTCI Thunderbird Restoration Details and Specifications Manual. It includes detailed instructions and photos for disassembling & assembling the steering column that include pinning the column to prevent separation. Most/all of the Tbird suppliers sell it; you don't have to buy it directly from CTCI. Otherwise, you're going to have to post some photos. Simply installing a smaller wheel, even if you used an adapter, should not have caused your problem.

I put the smaller Steering Wheel on my 56 T-Bird and had no Problem.
