1940 Battery Cables and Ground cables
 

I am finally intstalling my Ford Script Battery.
I want to use all new battery cables ,ground straps and starter cables.
Who has the most correct and best quality?

Carpenter...

Be certain to clean paint away from the stud on the dash panel. I also place an external tooth lock washer between the strap and dash panel.

As long as you're at it, remove all paint on the starter end plate where it faces the oil pan. Also, remove paint from that area on the oil pan. Those areas were masked when painted at the factory.

I always put a good coating of Di Electric grease on ALL the cleaned areas and cable ends that KUBE described about to make sure they STAY clean and are good solid conductive connections.

I got the so called correct ones from Carpenter as well, but after replacing them all with '00' cables, after having a lot of starting troubles, which were also just black vinyl coated and correct for my 52 F1. We got them made up from a local NAPA but they're available elsewhere online as well. The starting and reliability is much, much improved. Anyone who daily drives these 6v vehicles usually uses the 00. My friend also compared the two cut aways from each type of cable and reported to me that the 00 cables were a lot closet to the originals than the reproduction version. So theres that.

I had NAPA make up a new 00 battery cable for my '40 as well. The starter response is much improved over the old cable.

Don't forget thee is a small dooohickie that mounts on the starter's rear and grounds the stater to the pan. Absolutely needed. Also add a ground from the block to the frame. Henry was weak of grounds. A ground from the battery to the taillights always helps. (Isn't the cross piece bolted to the frame: clean the contact area

I would make up mu own cables if you have the capability. I called Carpenters last week to place an order , but ended up canceling the order once I found out what they wanted to charge for freight. Freight to the lower 48 states is probably not bad, but they have a new shipping policy where they charge 60% of the dollar amount of your order for shipping. This is ridiculous. I wanted an ignition switch, bezel and lock cyl. they wanted $60 to ship a couple of items that could be sent in a box as small as a small flat rate box. I cancelled the order and ordered the same exact parts from shoebox central, and they shipped the items in a small flat rate box through the USPS for $14. also ordered some parts from C&G that also sent stuff priority mail for about the same price. Needless to say , I will not be ordering anything from Carpenters, unless it is not available anywhere else. I know that because I live in Alaska, the shipping is usually a bit more, but 60% of the dollar amount of the order is stupid.

Try using someone who has a Carpenters account, thats closer to you, and you'll get much better service and knowledge typically. And the shipping will be quicker. I order from Chucks Trucks LLC. who has most of it in stock and I'll have it the next day from CT to NJ.

I would suggest that you search the internet for what is "most correct" and then take your requirements to the best local quality source to build your cables. Carpenter is NOT the best source as you will get what China produced cheapest.

Tom, The Carpenter cables will pass the judges scrutiny on the concourse. They will also work just fine on your car.
I know for a fact that your car is set up correctly so there is no need to have extra heavy cables made.
