simplest fuel filter to install What is the simpliest and easiest fuel filter to install on my 1933 model B ford?
|
Re:NO need for fuel filter because of fuel pump On the 1933/34 model B does the fuel pump also serve as a fuel filter or should I install and addition fuel filter.
|
Re: simplest fuel filter to install As KirkNJ posted in your "other" post, IF you have the "original" fuel pump, when you take the acorn nut off and remove the cap, there "Should" be a fine mesh screen inside the pump bowl, toward the upper half of the pump. That screen is the only means of "filtering" in the "original" fuel supply system. SO in essence, your pump is both a pump & filter all in one!!!

Re: simplest fuel filter to install Judging by Frank's other posts, enough gunk is getting past the fuel pump screen and clogging the jet of the carb.

Re: simplest fuel filter to install 1 Attachment(s)
Simplest & safest is probably an inline metal can filter mounted on suction side of pump. Usually includes hoses and clamps for 1/4", 5/16" or 3/8" tubing.

Re: simplest fuel filter to install 1 Attachment(s)
I have used two see through filters for past 20 years. Made my own end caps to fit the AN fittings. Also, have another one under the car between tank and electric fuel pump. Have had no leaks or "glass" problems. Install so it won't "bang" into something or touch another component.

Don't use one of these. Don't ask me how I know.

Re: simplest fuel filter to install One thing to remember : while your '32 Ford didn't come with a real filter when it was new, it also didn't come with a 90 year old fuel tank and line.

Had 2 Wix brand filters. One near the electric fuel pump by the tank and one between the fuel pump and carb. Both leaked where they threaded together. Luckily I found the leaks before they caused a fire. I initially installed them because the filter element was replaceable and you could see if there was contaminants in the glass housing. Just my experience but never again. |
Re: simplest fuel filter to install I had one of those glass filters on my model A. The screen is too coarse, stops big chunks, but a couple times every summer I would clean the carb bowl and find very fine silt in the bottom. Yeah, I know...tank should be cleaned but I drive the heck out of my cars and cleaning the filter is easy. Switched to a clear plastic one so I can see whats going on, with paper element inside, much better results. Frank, as I explained before, its easy, save your original line, make up a new one for the filter just to see whats happening. Easy peasy, couple fittings...some hose...two clamps

I know you said "don't ask" but, did the glass filter leak or break? |

Amen to that! If junk in the tank the fuel filter will not solve the problem -it will just keep getting plugged.Suggest dropping the fuel tank and inspecting it and clean it out.Quite a job if you have never done that.Impossible to do that when its in the car. Then while you're at it clean the sender and blow out the fuel line ( with it disconnected from the carb). |

Re: simplest fuel filter to install Quote:
Leaked where the ends screwed on to allow the filter to be changed |

Re: simplest fuel filter to install My glass one had a plastic screen, not a paper element. If there is a better element, that would be good. Mine never leaked, and I liked that you can easily take it apart for cleaning.
