Horn Wiring for a 1941 Ford Super Deluxe

Howdy, friends,

I have a 1941 Ford Super Deluxe, recently purchased. I've been going through the car, sprucing her up and getting her up to speed (literally and figuratively). The biggest problems have all been on the electrical side of things and one part that has me scratching my head is the horn. The horn button is intact, but the spring is missing and no wiring is installed. I also have two (high and a low, I believe) horns intact up front. It's fairly easy for me to replace something, but a little more difficult to do it when I don't have anything to reference. How is everything wired up in the steering wheel and down through to the front? I believe the relay is present. Any help will be appreciated.

Try this link, I searched the forum for horn wiring. I also have a model ‘A’ horn wired up with a separate button mounted under the dash.

Some of the parts vendors have horn wire kits. You need the wire kit, the spring, and there is a sponge rubber gasket that fits under the button.

If your horn ring is intact, you are lucky. Most of the 1941 horn rings have one of the three legs broken and because they are pot metal, they are virtually impossible to repair. So, handle it with care when pushing and twisting to install, and when using the horn ring to blow the horn.

Are you still 6 volts? Not a big deal but the horns sound different on 12 volts, and it is not pleasant.

Thanks! I'll check that out. I looked around the forum for a bit, but I didn't see that one. I'll have to accustom myself to navigating around here a little more.

The horn ring is in pretty good condition with no cracks, but I suspect that it isn't original. Most of the interior was gutted and redone in '85. The electrical system is still the original 6v and I'm tempted to update it to 12v, but mostly it has only been a small inconvenience. But I do keep a spare battery in the trunk...

A few shots of my 41 horn. There is a wire that is from the horn button and comes out the end of the steering column.

left steering column
center front wiring harness
right horn

I "updated" to 12v as batteries are easier to find. Just change a few light bulbs and get a 12v to 6v dash gauge voltage drop for your gauges. Wires to relay.

Interestingly, I have the "seashell" horns up front mounted in front of the radiator. I've done a little research and I'm wondering if they're for a later model of Ford - or they just used different horns on my mine. I'm fairly certain the wiring can't be too different.

The sea shell horns came along in 1947. They were not on Fords before that time.
