Phaeton rear spare mount

Hello all. Recently got a 29 Phaeton. It has a side mount spare; I’d like to have a spare in the back also. I see spare tire mount brackets for sale, but they have three bolts (unless I’m viewing something wrong), and the rear of my phaeton only seems to have two bolts in that area. What am I missing here? Thanks!

My '28 has 3, two at the bottom, one in the body.

The bolt at top goes through a curved re-inforcing brace inside the body. Without that brace, the heavy weight of the spare tire carrier plus the wheel and tire would pull outwards and bend the metal center panel. Don't even THINK about putting a bolt through the center panel without that all-important inner brace! You'll pay a fortune in body shop charges to repair the bowed-out center panel, which dents and bends very easily.

Even with that reinforcing brace in place, DO NOT put any more weight than the spare on it. They are just barely enough to carry the spare. Henry didn't use a gram more material than was absolutely necessary.

Makes sense, but I don’t have that third hole. I guess I would have to get the internal brace and drill the hole.

Hmm. I haven’t seen the internal brace for sale anywhere, perhaps I’m not using the right search term.

Re: Phaeton rear spare mount

I have a couple of original spare tire braces on the loose. Tomorrow I'll remove the rear seat cushion in my 1928 Phaeton and see if that brace is visible and then compare it against my samples. If any of them match the contours of my Phaeton, you can have one for the shipping cost to you. I kind of think, though, these are most likely from a coupe or roadster. I wonder if a brace from a Tudor Sedan would work? It seems to me that the contour of the rear center panel is similar between the two body styles.

By the way, ditto to "Snhcro909's" comment about extra weight on the spare tire carrier. As it is, you can flex the spare tire up and down in the rear and see the center panel tweaking. One spare tire ONLY unless additional bracing is added inside the body!

If it was mine I would put a trunk back there. A lot more practical than another spare.

A left fender and a rear spare seems unbalanced. I’d consider a right fender spare before a rear if you really want a second spare. Not that you asked…

I’ll happily pay shipping, thanks, just let me know. Appreciate it.

Re: Phaeton rear spare mount

I just checked the spare tire re-inforcing bracket in my 1928 Phaeton. Unfortunately my spare brackets are all too short. It takes a really long one, probably the same as a Tudor Sedan's bracket. I suspect mine are from Coupes and Roadsters with their short rear lower panel (below the decklid), while the Phaeton and Tudor Sedan have that large center panel that needs the extra length and strength of a longer re-inforcing bracket so that the panel doesn't stretch from the weight of the wheel and tire, let alone the carrier itself.
'Sorry... :( Maybe someone else has a loose bracket for you?

The inner channel support ‘29 Touring. I believe spare tire mount same part # as Tudor model.
