Back Window Installation
 

I've been putting off roping in my back window in my 54 Customline sedan after finding all the chrome trim and polishing it. The Carpenter directions say to install it dry. But the 54 shop manual says to put sealant ("rubber cement") between the glass and gasket.

There was no sealant between the old gasket and body when I removed it. And with the light green cloth headliner, that black butyl sealant would get everywhere.

What does everyone else do? Thanks!

I had the local glass guy come to my house and install the rear glass in my '54 Customline. No sealant was used, at all. I trust him. He's been doing classic cars for 35 years.

Thats the way to go haha. I may do that for a round body Falcon when I need to. I've roped in my 69 Cougar back glass twice with the butyl around the opening and it still leaks. But with a black vinyl interior, its not as obvious if I make a mess.

I used a quality sealant in the channel of my back glass weatherstrip.

Carpenter may say to "install it dry" but I have found many times over the years that while their weatherstrip seals are made of quality material the fit is not always as tight as I like it to be. This is after using their seals on both 50/60's cars and trucks.

Done it both ways. Both no leaks.
3m or dynatron I think mars a windshield sealant that stays malleable and seals.
I did the dry one car because I know it's coming out for headliner.
