$5000 for Flathead Facts by John W. Lawson??? Just recommended this book on another post and out of curiosity looked it up on eBay and Amazon. $5000??? eBay didn't have it but Amazon did. Of course that includes free delivery.
Really???? Is this book that rare? I'm a great fan of the book but is it really that hard to find and that much in demand right now? Wow! |
Re: $5000 for Flathead Facts by John W. Lawson??? I'll send you my copy for a couple of weeks if you promise to send it back and pay the postage.
It's a great book, but not worth that. I was kinda disappointed; it started out well, but descended in the end to some (useless to me) information about strengthening the valley for racing P.S. I have just about any flathead book you might want to see on the same basis. |

Re: $5000 for Flathead Facts by John W. Lawson??? Thats a fairly new thing I am seeing quite often on Epay, Ask some outrages price and hope some fool will pay it. I saw a smashed and rusted out grill for an old GMC truck that was only good for a part or two and that was questionable. The asking price was $1000 and just down the page was a nice driver condition same grill for $500. Tim

Re: $5000 for Flathead Facts by John W. Lawson??? A person would have to copy it and sell 99 copies on the black market for $50 apiece to get a good price for the book. They were around $39 10 years ago but they are likely out of print now since JWL died. Keep looking if you want to pay a decent price for it. I read where JWL's widow was trying to sell what copies she had left but it may have been more than what any one parts vendor wanted to pay.

Re: $5000 for Flathead Facts by John W. Lawson??? I have a copy.
Anyone interested in making a digital copy? drgoetz |
Re: $5000 for Flathead Facts by John W. Lawson??? I think the copyright rules are still in effect. Making copies would trigger a legal response if JWL’s widow is aware of that. Last I knew, she was trying to sell the remaining supply of the printed books. I never found out if that would have included the rights to the book. We passed on the opportunity.

Re: $5000 for Flathead Facts by John W. Lawson??? It's great those old Flathead guys got their knowledge into print before it was lost in time. There isn't a book by one of these boys that I haven't learned a lot from.....some just a trick here and there, others a yard full. John's is a good one, with lots of info for newbies and old grunts. My copy, endorsed by him to me April 15, 2014, is well worth having. Read page 93, Compression Ratio Calculation. But for a Grand? Naw.

Re: $5000 for Flathead Facts by John W. Lawson??? .......and definitely not 5 Grand.

Re: $5000 for Flathead Facts by John W. Lawson??? The time I spent with JWL was some of the beat information gathering thing that i;ve ever known we spent 3 week s driving to Bville and a few other places as well, After that I traded him my Dyno and he wrote hthe book, I have ine of the first copied printedm
The only way to get true compression ratio is to measure the combuston chamber when in stalled on the block. This can only be done ny measuring thr fluid used to fill it, Also the compression of the AF in the chamber doesn't start untill the intake valve closes. Gramps |
