Early Model A Pickup Differences

Hi guys,
I have a question in regards to the early model A pickup trucks. What were the major differences between the 28 and 29's?.I know the later ones were all together different as were the cars

Thanks

Re: Early Model A Pickup Differences

Pickup chassis were the same as the standard automobile chassis. Same early features thru April like left hand e-brake, early hubs, fluted headlight lenses, hood louver vents, drum tail light, red steering wheel, side mount cut-out on the Powerhouse genny.

did I miss anything ?

There is a variation on the front fenders the internal radius is much larger on the earlier fender. I have ‘28 roadster pickup and my truck has both late and early front fenders!!!

The 82A (28-29) cabs used 4 different rear panels. You should get the Restoration Guidelines, the will answer most of your questions.

How do you define early pickup?

The open cab pickup was introduced in January or February 1928.

Closed cab pickup introduced in mid 1928.

Yes, there was a closed cab used on the AA which was introduced in December 1927. Eventually the same cabs were used on A and AA chassis.

I would go with the ones that have the Model T based cabs.

You can get plenty of upper and lower rear panels through several Model A vendors, but I don't think anyone offers the high-window upper panel or the Ford-stamped upper panel. Those are even more rare than an AA express bed, which is basically unobtainium dodo bird's teeth.

Anyone know the part number for the high window upper cab panel?.

Sorry osaga, but I have some original, untouched, unmolested, barn found Dodo birds teeth in gold that I would let go at a very reasonable price.

Re: Early Model A Pickup Differences

Very early pickup beds use what is known as a "Z" bracket that the tail light mounts to, rather than the wood block used later. My truck has this early bed.

Re: Early Model A Pickup Differences

My 28 roadster pickup has that Z bracket also, the engine number dates mine to November '28 but I've never actually seen the frame number on the frame. My gas tank is not stamped with any date on it also.
Mine has one early large radius front fender and one small radius front fender.
The history of my truck can only be traced back to the very late 50s as it was pulled out of the Mojave desert in California back then.

3 Attachment(s)
I’m currently building a hot rod big truck….
AA express on modified BB frame
Attachment 553192

Attachment 553193

Attachment 553194
Bed and frame were rescued from a walnut farm in northern Ca. Three stake pockets, three hinge tailgate with no script, at least 100 feet long… Sectioned to remove damage and fit pickup. BB frame was also enormous. It has a serial number on the drivers side almost under the cab indicating early 32 with 4 cyl. but had no sheet metal. Cab is standard 82A from 29. Section and brackets removed from bed have been saved and stored…
