I posted this on a previous thread and I guess it got lost. I bought a cabriolet last week with no keys. car runs but rumble is locked.


what is the easiest way to open the rumble. previous owner left a ton of gold in there.................

Hello, could drill the lock out but better solution would be find a competent locksmith and see if he could make up a key for it , sometimes there is a visible code number that can be used to make a new key , good luck and congratulations on your purchase.

Try other keys , wiggle them
Original handle? Late removable tumblers type?
Is the tumbler jammed in the lock from swollen pot metal?
Usually not hard to pick or sample key manipulation if the lock is actually in operational condition.

Any real locksmith should be able to pick that lock in under a minute!!!

thanks guys. I will try a different set. The car looks like it was restored maybe 40 yrs ago and the rumble handle looks like a repro from that period.


thought there might be some simple trick....spray freezed ice or something.

I had no key when I got my coupe with a locked rumble lid so I pulled the front seat out, climbed back into the rumble area and reached up and removed the accorn nut from the backside of the locked handle. Then I could remove the handle assembly from the lid and get a new key made at the locksmith by taking him just the handle.
Also when you pull the handle out stop 1/2 way and twist it and you can open lid to get your gold even with the handle still locked :D

Phil, that is the answer I needed. I tried other keys and to no avail.


only other thought was to sawzall it off and buy another repro.


taking the car to a locksmith or bringing him here will be far to expensive.

What if there is so much gold in the way that you can't reach the lock from crawling through the back seat a man could a man be so Lucky???

How to pick a lock: Tools are available but a bobby pin, bent straight will work. The trick is to rake the tumblers while turning the lock with something like a screw driver. The tumblers will get stuck in the unlock positions. It takes some practice and patients but is not hard to do. Some modern locks don't work on the same principles so picking in this way is not possible.

Picking the lock is the most sensible, easiest way to open that lock. The internet sells so many lock-pick sets, Don't go for the cheapest sets. They break off in the locks all the time. A simple, small set (USA made) is all one needs. I've opened countless locks on old coin operated machines, last week I opened a 1934 Mills 5 cent slot machine in front of the owner and he was delighted to see the cash box was FILLED with old "V" nickels and Buffalo nickels.

Just reading this makes my back hurt. When I was young I might accomplish this but not any more. :) :mad:

well I was out there this morning and I couldnt pick the lock, as I tried.
I need to remove the whole seat frame to get back there and will prob do that.


buying a lock pick is a great idea, but not so sure I will figure it out anyway........

Ronn, go to locksmiths until you find one who can make a key for the rumble handle. I had no keys for my 32 Ford when I purchased the car and the locksmith had no trouble fixing me up. You should purchase some Model A key blanks so the locksmith has something to work with when he makes your keys. He may not have them in stock. Ed
