39 truck tailgate picture request. Updated with pictures of the repairs.

I need some pictures of what the bottom of the tail gate looks like and some measurements. The bottom of my tailgate rusted out and they had welded angle irons and pipe to the bottom. I am going to use some pipe for the bottom and fold some sheet metal to form the missing section. I need a pic of the bottom area and a measurement from the bottom of one of the panels to the bottom of the tailgate.
Thanks

I have a 39 and a 38 truck but cannot post pictures here until I get to 10 posts. So maybe soon I can help you out!

Have you considered just buying a new tailgate? I think Early Midwest Ford offers them.

I wish it was that easy. No one makes the express tailgate and the only one that’s sold in recent history went for $1800 and it was only a bit better than the one I have rust wise. The one I have is cut for a grain chute where the $1800 one was not.
I had contemplated buying 2 pickup tailgates and cutting into sections and welding them to make 1 truck tailgate. Each panel is longer so it would be 4 pickup sections to make a correct width truck tailgate but that’s more work than fixing what I have.

From what I can figure out there is no difference in the measurement from the bottom of the panel to the bottom of the tailgate it’s just the overall height and with that are different.
The truck is 54” wide and the pickup is 48”

I was at Mack Hils in Missouri a couple months ago and they had them stacked on their shelves. Under $300 new.

Why buy it when I can repair the original. I have 6 hours into it now and around 20 more hours of welding and grinding to go to finish it.

I called Mac’s last year and they said they had none and no one makes them. I was also told by another vendor that I would find one on the shelf between the hens teeth and rocking horse poop

Almost ready to paint. Went from having the bottom rusted off and a big hole for a grain chute to this

Much much better than one you could buy! I envy your tenacity!
