Try a new offshore Holley 94-are they that bad? I have a '44 2N tractor with a '50 8BA V8. Built in '17. Bone stock rebuild with .030 over pistons and stock truck cam. Stock Loadmatic distributor. Timed at 2 degrees (pin to line) with hardline to distributor capped. The carb was in bad shape when I got it. I have gone through it a few times but it really isn't right. It runs and idles but has always been rich. I am considering a new China 94 but with adding a genuine Holley power valve and jets. My application is a bit unique in that I don't really change throttle setting continuously like a car. I almost don't need an accelerator pump.
So how bad could that be for my application? I don't really want a China carb but I need it running at it's best next Friday. Thoughts? |

Send the one you have to Charlie Schwindler (CharlieNY) and let him rebuild it. IT will be 100% when you get it back, test run and basically a plug and play!!!! You will not be disappointed Charlie Schwindler 5845 Cole Road Orchard Park NY 14127 |
Re: Try a new offshore Holley 94-are they that bad? Why have you capped the distributor line. Won't get any advance without it. Won't run well.

Re: Try a new offshore Holley 94-are they that bad? I get that your tractor event is on Friday so I'll be the guy that says I have a chinacarb on my techemsah log splitter, (13.00), my son's honda dirtbike (18.00), my '79 toyota landcfruiser (67.00) and have one on the way for my stihl pressure washer (18.00). They all start nicely and perform the work they were intended to do. Last time I checked the Chinese were doing a pretty good job with the I phones, so I think to answer your question, these carbs aren't all that bad. I like running the holleys on my flatheads, but I have more of them sitting around than I have engines. In closing, I am sure a Charley NY carb is a way better piece and when the time constraint is over, send your 94 out to Charley and have a proper jewel on your manifold.

Re: Try a new offshore Holley 94-are they that bad? Well they look identical under an oil bath air cleaner to the originals except the ford script. They aren’t cheap either! I gave up on rebuilding originals a few years ago after the same local legend rebuilt it twice and it ran worse each time it came back. I have one on my truck and it runs flawlessly. Eventually I’ll get around to trying to find someone who can rebuild a decent original one. But some of them might be beyond rebuilding. Not sure if that’s the case but I’ve been told.,

Re: Try a new offshore Holley 94-are they that bad? Avoid using a China made carb if at all possible.

I thought Charlie was not taking any new work and his wife was very sick? I have procrastinated on this so it's my fault. There is a tractor show next weekend that has an optional 10 mile drive associated with it that I have always wanted to go on but was afraid. I should have started on this repair a month or so ago. I may try it, you can get one for $108 on evilbay. Thanks! |
Re: Try a new offshore Holley 94-are they that bad? Charlie’s wife passed, bless her soul. He is back to work.

Re: Try a new offshore Holley 94-are they that bad? Looks like you're about 75 miles from McMinnville. Maybe Michael at Third Gen can help you?

Re: Try a new offshore Holley 94-are they that bad? That Tractor is a beaut. The V8 truck badge on the front of the hood is a nice touch.

Just in case anyone is unfamiliar, Funk Aircraft Company built a kit from 1948-1952 to put a flathead 6 or an 8BA in a 8N tractor (it also works on a 9N or 2N but with modifications). Farmers wanted more power for pulley work or larger plows. There were about 200 V8 and 6000 6 Funk kits made. Mine is not one of those. It is a kit from Awesome Henry. Pretty easy to install. My biggest issue is cooling. I went through several iterations of radiator until now I have an aluminum radiator with electric fan-so much for period correct-and it does OK. I am always mindful of having 100HP with a 24HP transmission. I ordered an offshore carb from Ebay and a genuine Holley 94 power valve and a set of 51 jets. I'll update with my results. |

Re: Try a new offshore Holley 94-are they that bad? Just an update. Bought an offshore 94 on Ebay from JDM Speed. $118 delivered. Bought a set of genuine Holley #51 jets and a genuine Holley 4.5 Power Valve. Took the new carb apart and the float height was very close. Swapped the jets and power valve and put it back together. Bolted right on with no issue. The ball for the throttle linkage was too big for my worn out coupler but a few touches with a die grinder and they went together fine. The vacuum port for the distributor was fine. It had parts for what I assume is a kickdown on the left side but I did not need that. Changed from their choke cable bracket to my original but if I had an uncut choke cable theirs would have been fine. The fuel inlet fitting provided was for 3/8 hose and I had 5/16 but it was OK. I started with the idle screws out 1 1/2 turns and after setting the idle and letting it warm up I ended up about 3/4 of a turn out. (the carb that was on there would still run with idle screws all the way in) It starts quickly, idles nice, and no backfiring anymore. I went on a tractor ride that was 8 miles out and probably more like 10 back on the more scenic route. I have a Caterpillar temperature gauge with no numbers but it was not right on the red zone which is a change-it's always been in the red even on a cool day after a mile of running. I know the carb is not always the problem but it really worked well for me. Obviously 18 miles is nothing in a car but a long way at road speed on a tractor with a V8 and 4-cyl sized radiator (but it is aluminum with an electric fan). Next year I would like to find a Sherman transmission with overdrive to slow the RPMs at road speed. Anyway, the new offshore 94 carb worked well for me.

Re: Try a new offshore Holley 94-are they that bad? I'm glad that somebody decided to "take the plunge". Thank you for taking the time to do this and reporting back. It is good to have another source of workable components
