Re: Rear hub puller Here is my stupid story. I tried to save some money by mounting an unused spare tire on the road wheels on my Chevy truck. I spent the good part of a day trying to get the tire mounted, even using a bottle jack. I almost got it mounted but gave up and took the wheel and tire to a tire shop. They wanted to know why I was trying to mount a 16 inch tire on a 17 inch wheel. The spare used a different, low cost, steel wheel.

Re: Rear hub puller Many years ago, I had a 57 Buick, factory standard shift. if you know anything about Buicks, in 57 they were still using a torque tube drive arrangement with coil springs. To disconnect the trans from the drive shaft the rear had to be moved rearward about 4". To accomplish this, I used an old fashioned bumper jack, you know the type. The ones that you always found in the trunk, rusty, and the damned things were well known for slipping. Anyway I put the base of the jack against the banjo a the part that lifts the bumper against part of the frame and jacked until the rear moved enough to rear the frame. he coils flexed and it worked. I didn't get killed or seriously hurt that day. But there's plenty that could have gone wrong that day.
But anyway. the Buicks, Oldsmobiles, Caddies, and LaSalles used that box. That type of transmission was called a "Selector box" because one arm did all the shifting, while they other arm "selected" which of the airs of gears would be shifted 1or R or 2 or 3. I think it was a Warner T 10. Very strong trans, around 100lbs IIRC, but slow to shift. Terry |

I found a ring spanner that fitted the plugs so I used that - no go. The next step was to tie a rope through the other end, then pass the other end out around the radiator to the front of the car. I put my feet on the bumper and gave it all I had - no go. Then, the light globe over my head came on. I tied the rope to the end of the garage, started the engine, selected reverse and backed away. There was a crack like a rifle shot. As I piled out of the car, I didn't know whether I had broken the plug or I had beaten the $%^. I was encouraged by the fact that it was still running OK. I had to do that on one of the other plugs and it went just as well. I have filed that away but have never had to use it again (thankfully). Then there was the time (same car) that I couldn't get a wheel nut undone so I used a block of wood under the other end of the spanner while the car was up on the jack and asked my wife to sit in the car and hold her foot on the brake. As I lowered the car, the wheel nut broke loose. Repeat 4 more times and the wheel was off! That's all I'll tell now! |
